About Jack

Hello, my name is Jack W. and I am offering my tutoring services for Art, Animation, 3D, Photo & Video Editing. I am offering to teach classes in Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash (Animate), InDesign, After Effects, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Maya, ZBrush, MAX/MSP, Microsoft Office and basic computer skills for Windows and Mac.

I graduated in 2008 from Syracuse University with a BFA in Computer Art and have years of experience using Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, After Effects, Premiere Pro, Dreamweaver, InDesign) 3D animation software (Maya, Lightwave, ZBrush, Unity3D) for a variety of different projects such as 3D modeling/texturing/animation, 2D animation, video game design, motion graphics, iPhone/iPad graphics, medical animation, graphic design/illustration, logo design and product visualization. Graphics and animation I created in Illustrator and Flash are featured in the iPhone app "Resuscitation!".

From 2009-2012, I worked as Lead Animator for the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, creating over 900 3D animations of cataract surgery for an interactive training software for medical students. I have also worked as a Production Assistant for Coffee Pond Photography, where I performed Photoshop editing on individual and group portraits. Additional employment includes teaching Video Game Creation and Web Design/Flash Animation at iD Tech Camps ("The World's #1 Summer Computer Camp") to children ages 10-17 and providing private tutoring in Photoshop and Video Game Design for children and adults. I also gave a two-day Illustrator training to TR Miller Co. Inc., a company specializing in corporate gifts.

I worked at Wellesley College from 2013-2016 as New Media Technology Lab Assistant for the Art Department and then as Instructional Technology Specialist for Library & Technology Services. Duties included in-class and individual demonstrations in graphic design, animation, photography, video production and video game design.

I am also an avid digital photographer, shooting photos and video with my Canon Rebel T2i DSLR. I was hired by Tufts University to direct, shoot and edit a video promoting the Graduate Student Council that was shown at the 2013 Graduate Matriculation Ceremony. One of my photos was also featured in a children's magazine.

I live in Charleston, SC, have a car and can meet you at your convenience.

My portfolio, resume and demo reel are available on request. Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Flash

Flash was one of the first computer design programs that I ever used, back when I took the Creative Vacation summer camp program at Mass College of Art in middle school. It is a powerful vector animation software which allows for unlimited self-expression and creativity.

I have a good deal of experience using it since then for projects which have included animations, websites, games, presentations, storyboards and even art installations. I would be more than happy to show you its capabilities. I will never cease to be impressed with what people are able to create with it!

Adobe Illustrator

I took a training course in Adobe Illustrator at Future Media Concepts in Boston as part of my internship there. I have used Illustrator for a diverse array of projects, including logo design, web design, 3D textures, iPhone/iPad graphics and more.

Illustrator is a versatile vector graphic design software which allows you to create text and graphics that appear crisp and clean at any image resolution. A must know for any serious graphic designer!

Adobe InDesign

I took a training course in Adobe InDesign as part of my internship at Future Media Concepts in Cambridge, MA.

InDesign is a very useful tool in the graphic designers toolbox which enables you to create dynamic book, newsletter and other page layouts. Consider also taking training in Photoshop and Illustrator to enhance your layouts with custom photos, logos and other graphic design elements.

Adobe Photoshop

I have used Photoshop steadily for over 10 years, going back into high school. The number of projects for which I have used it is far more than I could remember, including everything from photo correction, 3D /2D textures, web design, logo design, panoramas and countless others. I also used Photoshop as a Production Associate for Coffee Pond Photography in 2011, doing image editing of individual and group school portraits.

Photoshop is an industry-standard image editing software with an ever-expanding number of tools. Painting, color-correction, panorama stitching, retouching, texture map creation, video editing; there is no limit to what you can create with it!

Autodesk Maya

I have been using Autodesk Maya for years on various projects which have included 3D modeling, product visualization, character texturing and animation and video game design.

Maya is an incredibly in-depth 3D animation software with a truly mind-boggling number of features. Its flexibility and versatility has made it an industry standard for film, video game, advertising and design studios around the world.

I specialize in 3D modeling, texturing and rendering, but have experience with almost every facet of Maya, including animation, rigging, dynamics and particle effects.

General Computer

I have used computers since I was a child in Cambridge using my mom's old IBM PC with a two color screen: green and black! I have a diverse knowledge of operating systems and software for both Windows and Mac.

Don't be intimidated by computers! They are a lot of fun once you get comfortable with them and allow you to do amazing things! All skill levels are welcome, and no question is too basic.

Graphic Design

As a digital artist, I use graphic design tools such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, Flash, InDesign and Dreamweaver on a daily basis for a variety of freelance and personal work. I have provided one-on-one tutoring for years and am constantly amazed at the work being produced by artists I've met of all ages.

In 2005, I taught Web Design & Flash Animation at Internal Drive Technology Camps, the #1 summer computer camp. My skills were further sharpened when I was able to take 5 Adobe Creative Suite training courses after completing my internship at Future Media Concepts, 'the nation's premier digital media training organization.' I also use graphic design software for my job for classroom demos, private instruction and other projects.

Macintosh

I have used Macintosh computers for over 10 years for practically everything from animation, 3D modeling, video and photo editing, programming, game design, word processing, spreadsheets, you name it! My current main computer is a Macbook Pro 17 in. laptop with a separate partition with Windows installed, so I can switch back and forth between operating systems as necessary.

Microsoft Windows

I have used Windows operating systems since I was in elementary school, dating back to before Windows 95! I feel equally comfortable with both Windows and Mac, and have used both in professional, academic and personal contexts on a variety of projects, such as photo editing, 3D animation, video editing, game design and innumerable other specific software.

When I worked at iD Tech Camps, I taught classes to children ages 10-17 in Video Game Creation, Game Modding and Web Design/Flash Animation on PCs running Windows.

My Macbook Pro laptop has Bootcamp, so I can run either Windows 7 or OSX depending on the subject and student's needs.

Photography

In high school, I learned how to compose, develop and print black & photos with a Nikon FG film camera. Since then, I have been shooting in RAW using digital cameras for many years, from my Canon PowerShot S60 to my current DSLR, the Canon Rebel T2i.

At my job as New Media Technology Lab Assistant at Wellesley College, I created a video tutorial on shooting photos and adjusting the settings of my digital camera. I edit my photos using Photoshop and know how to organize them using Bridge and Lightroom.

Video Production

I wrote, directed and helped edit my first video when I was in 7th grade. Since then, I have learned and used digital video cameras (including my current Canon Rebel T2i DSLR) and video editing software (Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, After Effects, iMovie) in educational, personal and professional settings. In 2012, I directed, shot and edited a video promoting the Tufts Graduate Student Council that was shown at the 2013 Graduate Matriculation Ceremony.

At the college where I currently work, I assist students, faculty and staff in the use of digital cameras, audio and lighting equipment and Final Cut Pro for both video production courses and independent projects. I also produced a series of instructional youtube videos as a reference guide for using Canon DSLRs, video cameras and Adobe Photoshop.

Great Tutor

Jack is tutoring us in InDesign. He's really attentive and patient, and knows the program. He took the time to understand our project goals. He adjusts to our learning speed. He worked on his own between our lessons so he really prepared for our next step - that makes it a really productive hour. He was easy to schedule and always is on time. Learning a lot and enjoying it.
