In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been tutoring in the school district for years in the k-12 arena. My services involve help with literacy, phonics, reading, arithmetic, english/language arts, earth science, and social studies.
I would like to be allowed to tutor phonics to students. I am a highly qualified educator. I, currently, teach reading and math recovery to elementary school students. I coach phonics and English language arts intervention. My intervention program is very successful.
First of all, I have presided over or have been the host and/or speaker at many events including church affairs. I do have a theater background. I participated in performing arts since I was in grade school. I took acting classes at the Dock Street Theater in Charleston when I was in elementary school. I proceeded to participate in plays in the Charleston community (YMCA, MLK-teen Star Search, etc.) and my local church as a high school student and an adult. I have always had a passion for acting, reading, writing, dramatic dance, as well. I performed a dramatic dance performance at a few weddings.

I have knowledge and experience in the area of religion. I have taken several religious courses in my undergraduate studies and plans to, eventually, become a minister at my local church. These courses were interesting, and insightful. I deeply appreciated my time spent in these courses.
I have instructions, tips, and strategies for U-6 soccer. I coached this age group Fall of 2010. My team won the majority of their games. I understand children of this age, etc. I do have sympathy for their thoughts and emotions. Doing well makes kids happy. I also explain to them that no one always wins a game. I have a 3 1/2 yr. old and a 5 1/2 year old. My 5 year old played on the team and was the star player!
I teach the kids that we are playing to have fun. However, I also teach the kids that the game involves competition, as well. Therefore, I also implement strategy and I teach them competitiveness. I teach team spirit and how to be a team player.
I plan to, eventually, coach a traveling soccer team. In addition, I will proceed to U-8 soccer in the 'Fall of 2011. I love soccer because it is exciting and fun! It would be great if I could do this as a profession. After coaching my daughter's team this past year, I have gained more of an interest in sports as a whole. We, now, enjoy hockey games, bowling, baseball games, and cheerleading.
I am, currently, pursuing a Master's degree in Instructional Psychology. Furthermore, I took a study skills course and a career development course in my undergraduate studies. I am familiar with study skills geared towards grade school, high school, and college students. I have structured and unstructured guidelines on study tools and tips. It depends on if the student is comfortable with step by step rules of instruction. Some students are comfortable with what works for them as an individual.
An example of structure: Study in the same place or environment at the same time everyday
Take a 15 minute break after each hour of studying.
A reading comprehension tip for elementary students is that students are able to comprehend what they read better if it is something that they like or are already familiar with (background knowledge). For example, a male student who loves sports, but does not enjoy reading or feels that learning to read is too much of a challenge will begin to enjoy reading if some books pertaining to sports are implemented.
I do have many other study skills that are grade or age specific.
