In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught elementary school for 18 years. As a special education teacher, I taught all subjects: English, reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. I also have taught general education reading and math in both after school programs and summer school.
I have a Master of Education degree from Converse College, and am certified, and highly qualified to teach both music and special education, learning disabilities.
One of my favorite things about high school was music. I was in both band and chorus. We took trips sometimes, had concerts, and sometimes it was just fun to listen to the band during our rehearsals.
I majored in music in undergraduate school. I loved learning about music; music theory, music history, and playing in band. Music is a great gift to us, and to understand aspects of it can make it even more enjoyable.
I've taught study skills to my students. Often, they're not aware of what is important in a textbook, or whatever it is they're using to study. Highlighting helps, also the strategy of looking at pictures, titles, and charts to see what is important. From just looking at a picture, for instance, a student can often figure out what he knows, and what he needs to know about the text.
