About Arline

I am a retired English professor and businesswoman. My teaching specialty is teaching English to speakers of other languages and remedial English, but I have taught all English levels from Basic Literacy to English Literature, including Speed Reading and Public Speaking. I have also taught Test Preparation and have served as a proctor for national testing agencies. I enjoy teaching children and adults, knowing how important a mastery of language is in the real world. Unlocking the door to success for my students has become a real calling.

My Masters in Education specialized in Instructional Systems Design. As a tutor, I would determine with the student and others, such as parents ans teachers, the exact purpose of the tutoring. Following testing of the student to determine his or her weaknesses, we would arrive at a set of goals for the student. Based on appropriate learning materials, detailed lesson plans would be drawn up in units designed to achieve the established goals. Each lesson plan would be designed to bring the student closer to the goal in a measurable way, which would be outlined before the tutoring session, at the beginning of each session, and summarized at the end. Practice would be provided, and evaluations would be made at the end of each teaching unit. I start with a warm up, facilitate the tackling of the lesson material, and end with a fun activity or challenge that will bring the student back with enthusiasm. English, presented well, does not have to be a boring subject, and learning English in a structured, but stress free, environment.

I would like to hold lessons at a tutoring room at either the Abbeville or Iva Libraries, and will also work online with students. I look forward to helping you meet your goals with success.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

My Masters Degree is in Curriculum Development, especially for the teaching of English to speakers of other languages (ESOL). In addition to teaching ESOL, I have also taught College English, including Composition and College Reading. Before I retired, I was teaching Remedial English to students just entering college, and I found myself teaching exactly the same skills required by the English section of the ACT.

ACT Reading

My Master's Degree was in Curriculum Systems Design, with a specialty in teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL.) As an ESOL professor, I have an in depth knowledge of English and I have developed a successful approach to teaching Reading and Writing skills. Towards the end of my career, I taught Remedial English to students, hoping to enter college. As such, I found myself teaching exactly the skills needed for the ACT. Since then, I have tutored many students to prepare them for the ACT and the SAT. Those students with a teachable attitude have done extremely well.

English

As an ESOL teacher and college English professor, I have taught English at every level from Basic Literacy to College Composition and Reading. I have also worked for the Educational Testing Service, and I tutor for SAT prep.

ESL/ESOL

My Masters Degree was in Curriculum Development for ESOL. I taught every level of ESOL from beginning literacy to advanced for the TOEFL. I taught in Secondary School, at Community College, and also intensive courses at an English Language Institute for foreign graduate students.

Grammar

My Masters Degree was in Curriculum Design with a specialty in teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL.) As such, I am well qualified to teach English Grammar. Teaching was actually an autumnal career for me after a career in business. I began honing my English skills when writing proposals and contracts, trying to make sure that the customers and subcontractors had a clear understanding of agreements that were being made. I understand how important it is to have a good grasp of vocabulary, writing skills, and public speaking, and I have been called to teach these skills to others. They are the keys to success.

Proofreading

My Master's Degree was in Curriculum Systems Design, specializing in ESOL. I have taught every level of English from beginning literacy to College Literature. At the end of my career, I taught Remedial English to prospective college students, who needed extra help before they could handle academic English. I have an in depth knowledge of Grammar and Writing Skills, and have proofread government licensing applications, grant proposals, maritime contracts, and all manner of business documents.

Public Speaking

An experienced public speaker, I started as a debater, and won awards in extemporaneous speaking contests. Later, I served on speaking boards for various organizations including the League of Women Voters and the Chamber of Commerce. I was a successful businesswoman, project manager, negotiator, and college professor. At Northern Virginia Community College, I taught several semesters of Public Speaking, and embraced a system of preparation called TIMMSCAT, which I would share with any student. It is difficult to teach public speaking without an audience, but along with in-house training in preparation and presentation, I would try to arrange for group experiences, even if I had to throw a few "speech parties" with some supportive friends.

Reading

My Master's Degree was in Curriculum Systems Design, specializing in ESOL. I have taught every level of English from beginning literacy to College Literature. At the end of my career, I taught Remedial English to prospective college students, who needed extra help before they could handle academic English. Among other Reading skills, I have taught Speed Reading and Rapid Comprehension for Standardized testing.

SAT Reading

My Masters Degree is in Curriculum Development, especially for the teaching of English to speakers of other languages (ESOL.) Teaching ESOL requires an in-depth knowledge of Grammar and its applications. In addition to teaching ESOL, I have also taught College English, including Composition and College Reading. Before I retired , I was teaching Remedial English to students just entering college, and I found myself teaching exactly the same skills required by the English sections of the SAT.

I have experience preparing students for these tests, and if the students are open and teachable, they can really improve their performance. I find it very enjoyable to help bright young people find the path to success.

SAT Writing

My Masters Degree is in Curriculum Development, especially for the teaching of English to speakers of other languages (ESOL.) Teaching ESOL requires an in-depth knowledge of Grammar and its applications. In addition to teaching ESOL, I have also taught College English, including Composition and College Reading. I developed a special method for teaching Writing that has been very successful, which emphasizes the intent of the writer to change thinking and behavior in the reader, and demands good support, and cohesive structure. Before I retired , I was teaching Remedial English to students just entering college, and I found myself teaching exactly the same skills required by the English sections of the SAT and ACT.

In addition, it is important to realize that these exams do not test for advanced levels of competency, but rather test for focus, attentiveness to detail, sound logic, and discernment, Most of the answers are right there on the page. The student needs to be taught to focus, what to look for, and how to deal with the tricky answers meant to confuse the inattentive test taker. I have experience preparing students for these tests, and if the students are open and teachable, they can really improve their performance. I find it very enjoyable to help bright young people find the path to success.

TOEFL

My Masters Degree was in Curriculum Development for ESOL. I taught every level of ESOL from beginning literacy to advanced for the TOEFL. I taught in Secondary School, at Community College, and also intensive courses at an English Language Institute for foreign graduate students.

Writing

As an ESL teacher and Remedial English teacher, I have taught writing at every level from basic literacy to college composition. I have developed a special method, which I hope to share in a textbook for homeschoolers.
