About Kaitlyn

Hi! My name is Kaitlyn. I am 18 years old, and a graduate of Blythewood High School. I am currently a South Carolina Teaching Fellow at the College of Charleston where I am enrolled in their Elementary Education program. I was able to complete a 120-hour elementary teaching internship at an elementary school through my school's Work Based Learning program where I had the opportunity to work hands on with students in standardized test preparations, specific subject tutoring and hands on, engaging lessons. I have immense passion for working with children who I believe are the key to our nation's future. My biggest goal is to give your child the tools and confidence to ensure their success at any academic goal they wish to achieve!

AREAS OF SERVICE: I offer tutoring in the areas of elementary AND middle level reading, English proficiency, grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills.

AVAILABILITY/RATES: In mid-August 2016 I will be moving into my dorm at the College of Charleston where I will continue offering tutoring services in the Charleston/Folly Beach/Mount Pleasant area. Until then, I will be here in the Blythewood/Columbia/Elgin area offering tutoring services. I am available both weekdays and weekends, and charge $40/an hour.

In high school I completed Honors and Advanced Placement level English courses, was a 2-year inductee of the National English Honors Society and scored in the 91st percentile nationally on the English/Writing portion of the PSAT standardized test. During my time as a teaching intern I was able to work with several 3rd-5th grade students who displayed lower than average reading comprehension and writing skills. I was able to see notable progress in all of my students at the end of my internship.

If you are interested in my services or have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me! I am excited to help provide your child the tools and confidence they need to achieve every academic goal they wish to achieve.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

During my junior year of high school I was able to complete a 120-hour elementary education internship at a local elementary school. Through my internship I was able to work hands on with teachers in planning and executing engaging lessons, assisted with standardized test preparation, and more. In order to prepare myself each and every day for my next lesson, I had to review the most recent South Carolina Common Core Standards booklet. I had the opportunity to be trained by several teachers on specific Common Core methods in the subject areas of math, science, and English. Although I have a lot still yet to learn, I consider myself fairly proficient in the South Carolina Common Core state standards and their preferred methods of teaching.

Elementary (K-6th)

Throughout high school I have maintained a 4.4 or higher GPA despite my challenging Honors and Advanced Placement coursework. I was able to complete a 120-hour elementary school teaching internship through my school's Work Based Learning Program in which I had the opportunity to assist with state standardized test preparation, hands on lessons, and got to work with students who were struggling to grasp concepts in class. I was able to see notable improvements in my students by the end of my internship, which I consider to the biggest reward I received from my internship. Through an extensive and selective application and interview process, I was named a South Carolina Teaching Fellow at the College of Charleston where I am set to major in Elementary Education this fall.

Reading

High school graduate, graduated in the top 6% of my class in Honors and Advanced Placement classes and therefore named a Palmetto Fellow, 2-year National English Honors Society and 1 year National Honors Society member, completed a full semester elementary teaching internship through my high school's Work Based Learning program, named a South Carolina Teaching Fellow at the College of Charleston where I will start my Elementary Education degree in the fall.

Vocabulary

During my 9th and 10th grade year of high school I took Honors English courses and my 11th and 12th grade year I took Advanced Placement Language and Composition (and passed the AP Exam with a 4) and Advanced Placement Literature (my exam score will be available early July). I was a member of my school's National English Honors Society as a junior and senior and completed society service hours through our Writing Center, a service our society offered to help all 9th-12th grade students throughout the school with proofreading essays. I was able to complete a 120-hour elementary school teaching internship through my school's Work Based Learning Program in which I had the opportunity to assist with state standardized test preparation, hands on lessons, and got to work with students who were struggling in the areas of English and writing. I was able to see notable progress in all of the students from the beginning to the end of my internship.
