Hi! My name is Kristen, and welcome! I am currently a fifth grade teacher at a private school. I graduated from Limestone College with a degree in Elementary Education. I have several past tutoring experiences. In college, I completed almost 30 hours of tutoring for course requirements. After college, I held a job with a tutoring company as site director/tutor for Blacksburg Elementary schools. I tutored almost three hours a day, four days a week.

I am interested in tutoring students who need extra help outside of the classroom, students who are having problems with particular subjects, and even students who just want a little extra study time. I do have experience working with children with learning disabilities and behavioral disorders. My schedule is fairly flexible. However, late afternoons/early nights work better through the week. I would also be willing to do Saturday mornings. I love working one on one with children or in small groups where they get the attention and help they need. I like to try different methods when beginning with a child to see what works best for them. For instance, where one child may be more tactile and need blocks to count, another child may be more visual and need to draw. I also like to play games or use flash cards to break up the monotony. After all, your child has already been in school for six hours, as have I, and needs something a little different.

I would be glad to answer any questions you may have. I am so glad you are willing to get the extra help for your student and would love the chance to be a part of their education.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified teacher in SC through grade six. I have worked two years in a private school teaching fifth and sixth grade. I have taught all subjects: language, math, science/health, spelling, reading, and geography/history. I spent a semester doing student teaching in third grade where I also taught all of the previous listed subjects. My favorite subjects to teach are language and writing. I took two years worth of college classes focusing solely on k-6 education. I know several teaching techniques, including small group work and hands on activities. Language for these grades usually includes basic word pronunciation, sentence structure, and parts of speech. In the higher grades, such as fourth, fifth, and sixth, diagramming begins. Math usually goes from very basic to pre algebra and some geometry. Spelling and reading increase on difficulty level from grade to grade and even increases levels within the grade. Science ranges from health and general hygiene to animal science and early biology. History for these grades include geography of the world, world history, and more local history, such as the state of SC and US history.

Study Skills,

Study Skills

Study skills can be very important, especially since a lot of students and children have test anxiety. Being confident in studying and preparation can also cause confidence in testing and school. Very rarely do two people study the same. The key is to finding out what works best for each student. While one person may be able to read information over and over to attain it, another person may need to write it out. There are also ways of studying so that it does not seem like "work." Some examples include flashcards and review games. Repetition is also important. You should work with the person until they are comfortable with the subject.

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

I have worked for the last two years with numerous children with ADD/ADHD. Children with either of these require a certain patience. It often takes a little longer for them to comprehend subjects, not because they aren't capable, but because they just need a little extra one on one help. Children with ADD/ADHD often are better visual or tactile learners. This means they may require more "hands on" learning. Tutoring allows this to happen where it may be difficult to achieve this in a classroom with others.

Kristen is a great tutor. My son has tutored with her 3 times now and he really likes her and feels comfortable with her. She always replies very promptly. He says she cares and is very interested in him improving his sat scores.

I feel like we are off to a good start. Kristen had some good ideas as to evaluate him and hopefully help improve his reading.
