George Mason (Master's)
I taught elementary school for eight years. I have taught second, fourth, and fifth grade. I love teaching math and the joy of reading books. While teaching at Port Royal Elementary, I started the Girls Run Club and directed the annual 5k. I love fitness, especially running and pilates. I decided to become a teacher because I love school and learning. I have two master degrees and could go back for more. Growing up, I was never good at standardized tests and I never was in gifted programs. I try to emphasize to students that tests are important but they only measure one kind of smart. I don't stress over tests because I don't want students to stress over them. Another love of mine is helping others. I can't wait to help more students through tutoring.
I have taught math for seven years on the elementary school level. I taught using Everyday Math program. I have taken several hours of professional development on topics under elementary math- like using apps, manipulative, and play.
I have taught reading for eight years on the elementary school level. My first year at Port Royal, I taught second grade. I soon had my students independent reading for an hour. Many years, my students scored high on end of the year tests in Reading. Over the years, like in math, I have taken several hours in professional development on reading.
I have eight years experience teaching elementary age students.
I have been into fitness since college (1996). In 2002, I became a personal trainer. I did this for two years. Since 2004, I have taken yoga and pilates. I now teach both. I have been teaching since 2010 at the Y. While teaching at Port Royal, I started the Girls run Club. I have been running since 1997. I have run 5 marathons, 1 half ironman, and 2 half marathons. Currently, I am working on getting my personal training certificate again. I am also giving private pilates lessons.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
