About Frances

I have spent many years teaching English abroad, mostly to young adults but also to children. I have an MA in Education, with a specialization in ESL (University of London). I also have ESL and English Lit certifications from the State of Georgia.

I have I worked with pupils of all ages and all levels. After I meet you and we start lessons, I try to take advantage of the interactive process of getting to know you, and hope that you will enjoy getting to know me, too, through our conversations. If you have specific goals, it is often a matter of your telling me in which situation in using English you might feel you need more help. In this way, the materials and approaches I choose will be right to meet your needs. Of course, you might just like basic English. That is quite understandable, too. Whatever your needs, we can work together to set up goals within a reasonable time frame.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

Besides my ESL background, which included teaching methodology to both literate and illiterate students, I have completed as of March 2014 a course in phonics with The Read to Succeed group which helps under-achievers with reading reach grade level. The program goes from first to third grade, the ages when it is crucial for students to learn to read. This is a phonics based program. If I am not too late, I will be taking another course in phonics with the Carolina Day School (Key Learning Ctr) in June. In this course, problems of dyslexia are addressed.

Phonics

I am currently working with an award-winning volunteer group in the city of Asheville Public Schools to help children from kindergarten to grade's 3 who are under grade level learn to read. Training included a 25-hour program in the Orton-Gillingham method of phonics. Further inputs into the method are provided on a monthly basis. This training supplemented my knowledge of phonetics as a trained ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher.

Reading

I have recently had training in helping elementary school children learn to read based on a syllabus that goes from kindergarten through 3rd grade.

Study Skills

When I taught high school, I had study skills classes. Students used computer programs for geography. We practiced listing key words for the subject matter whether geography, history, or English. We practiced outlining, summarizing, recognizing topic sentences, recognizing text organization.
