Hi, my name is Mark M. I am 43 years old and have been teaching math and chess for 10 years until I decided my calling was in tutoring and helping students one on one. I have a masters degree in education from Augusta State University. I have a degree in chemical engineering from Clemson University, and have always enjoyed math, numbers, science, and chess. I left engineering to enter the education field for the following 3 reasons:

Hi, my name is Mark M. I am 43 years old and have been teaching math and chess for 10 years until I decided my calling was in tutoring and helping students one on one. I have a masters degree in education from Augusta State University. I have a degree in chemical engineering from Clemson University, and have always enjoyed math, numbers, science, and chess. I left engineering to enter the education field for the following 3 reasons:

1) To make a difference in the lives of students to prepare them for life after school
2) To provide the real-world application to help students understand why they are learning the material
3) To make math fun and enjoyable

As a teacher with one year experience in middle school and 8 years in high school, it has been a true pleasure to make a difference in the lives of my students. I do not consider myself just a teacher, but a life coach. Yes, I want my students to master math, but I also want them to be better people to thrive in society after school. I have 10 years of experience as an engineer and manager in industry. I feel I have been able to bring that real-world application to the classroom and show my students why they are learning what they are learning and where they could use it, which is just as important as actually learning the material. Finally, I make it fun! In my classroom, I have prided myself on making math enjoyable through laughing, games, music, technology, etc. in order to build that relationship with the student so we tackle math as a team. Many students over the years have told me I am the best teacher they have ever had at any level or subject for these reasons and my passion for helping them succeed.

My areas of expertise are in 8th through 11th grade math as well as coaching chess. I cannot wait to work with you, so let’s get started!

I have taught chess to hundreds of students over the years, through 1-on-1 tutoring as well as in groups. I was the Chess Club sponsor for 10 years at my previous high school and organized the first ever inter-high school chess league in Augusta, Ga. I am a strong believer that the game of chess stretches the mind and keeps your brain sharp, which potentially translates to being focused in other areas of life. Most people love a good challenge, and chess continually offers that unique opportunity. I am qualified to teach all ages and abilities and am passionate about the wonderful game of chess.

Mark’s most endearing teaching quality is his warm approach. From beginning to end, his informal method of unlocking algebraic concepts makes learning a fun and interesting process. His usable real world examples are applied to useful real world scenarios; in fact, you’ll find yourself using his techniques to save a few bucks at the supermarket. His videos are short, sweet and organized in a killer sequence that builds well upon one another. And he’s willing to apply that all important human touch to learning. If you’re not getting something, he’s flexible enough to work with you, really work with you. Indeed, Mark’s tutoring style has helped me wake up some once dormant math muscles and I have to admit I’m feeling pretty proud of myself. Calculus here I come!
