Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I work as a Certified Special Education Teacher and I have worked directly with students who have diagnosis of ADHD and ADD. I have taken graduate level courses in working with students with the said diagnoses and actively use techniques and skills to help students achieve academic success. Additionally I research and try various approaches to teaching students with ADHD and ADD.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I am a Certified Special Education Teacher and have worked and currently work directly with individuals with Autism diagnosis. Additionally, I have taken several graduate level courses on the specifics of Autism and the Spectrums. Furthermore I have learned and taught educational strategies to students with the diagnosis.

Dyslexia

I have my teacher certification in Special Education and currently teach students with varying disabilities and have worked one on one with students with diagnoses of Dyslexia. I also have a sister who has Dyslexia who shares ideas in strategies that have worked well for her from childhood to adulthood in her academics and employment. Additionally,I have taken graduate level courses that covered diagnosis such as Dyslexia and other learning disabilities.

Elementary (K-6th)

I currently have a K-12 certification in Special Education. I obtained my student teaching credentials in an elementary school setting grades K-5, where I worked with both general and special needs students in the standard core academic subjects of Math, Social Studies, English/Language Arts, and Science. I also assisted in the school's Social Skills Program that offered an education in social skills, which included student assistance and understanding of organizational skills, self-esteem, respect, honor and loyalty.

I have also have experience in the six grade curriculums. I worked in an Inclusive school setting where I provided direct learning guidance to students enrolled in English, Math, Social Studies, Science, and the Computer lab courses. I also conducted direct services in a Mastery Reading Program that emphasized the practice and use of Phonics.

Elementary Math

I've taught students in grades k-5th varying math concepts through the use of textbook and other creative means. The focus was in teaching the students their foundational math skills so that they would be in a position to have success in the upper level math courses and state wide assessments. I realize that students learn differently and I continue to use strategies and techniques that work for each of the students I encounter.

Sociology

Greetings,

My name is Yolanda Burgess-Massey and I earned my undergraduate degree in sociology after realizing my interest in understanding of human environment and social behaviors. I earned 60+ academic credits in courses that revolved around social environments of various cultures, moral and value systems, ethnicities, marriage and family and overall the organizational components that are similar and differ from varying countries, cities, or towns. I am able to provide assistance in courses that revolve around sociology, as I have used the knowledge to understand how to work successfully with people from varying cultures in both my previous career as a Human Services Case Manager and as a special education teacher.

Special Needs

I currently have a Master's Degree in Special Education and have certification. I am certified to teach multi-categorical subjects in Special Education in grades K-12. I have been teaching for over 6 years, but have been working with either at risk youth or special needs populations for seventeen years.
