About Jack

I specialize in junior and senior high English lessons, reading, writing and in ESOL classes, particularly for Spanish speakers. I have a thorough knowledge of English grammar and am comfortable with any age group, from 6-7 year olds to adults. While teaching in the states, I have worked in public schools, private language institutes and dealt with diplomatic personnel. Recently, I spent 3 years in Peru teaching English to many private students as well as to college students seeking to expand their employment possibilities by acquiring English language skills.

I will be available in the Delray Beach area and wish to work with motivated, interested students who wish to become more proficient in language skills. This can also include aspects of public speaking.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked as an ESOL teacher for 3 years in Peru with Spanish speakers who are either learning English as new speakers or seeking to improve their English language skills for the university or an employment position.

Grammar

Grammar and sentence structure are making a comeback from many years of neglect. Though not the movie star of English lessons, it can be a very interesting study especially for those who are interested in writing, advertising, etc.

Public Speaking

My major in college was English Education with a minor in Speech & Drama. Public speaking is something I have practiced for many years in the field of education as well as in the private sector and in churches. I enjoy this topic and love to work with those who fear public speaking to help to lower their personal phobias.

Reading

Reading employs many complex skills aside from the simple phonetics and vocabulary aspects. Perhaps critical thinking, analysis and extrapolation are the most needed. This requires practice and guidance but once learned, it is there for life.
