About Andrew

I love teaching science because I know how frustrating it can be to not understand a concept. Although I now hold doctoral degrees from Boston University School of Medicine, it was not always easy for me to learn science and math material when I was in high school and college. So I know what you are going through. I also know that you can learn this material well and completely. We will work to first figure out HOW you learn so that I can best help you to learn the material you want to master. It wasn't until I found out how I learned new material that I was able to become successful as a student. So I bring this experience into every student interaction I have. Always keep in mind that before I earned PhD degrees in Physiology and Biophysics as well as taking a large number of classes in higher order mathematics and computer programming, I was a student struggling to understand this material.

I have taught at both the high school and college level and I am very familiar with not only the environment of each type of school, but also the way in which material is presented. This allows me to tailor our sessions to fit your unique needs. Tutoring is an opportunity for a student to have the material presented in a way that is best for them alone, rather than in a fashion aimed at a group of people. I strive to make every interaction a personalized one. In my teaching experience I have taught Nursing students, Pharmacy students, Pre-Medical and Medical students and students interested in pursuing advanced degrees in Biology or Biochemistry. No matter what your goals, I am here to help you achieve them!

I have more than 15 years experience teaching both high school and college, with high ratings from students at all levels. I don't just cover the material, I also work with my students to help them develop strong study habits they can take with them throughout life. As a lifelong learner myself, I find myself still using the good study skills I developed decades ago.

I make sure our sessions take place in a quiet environment conducive to the learning experience. This can either be at my college office located in Warwick, or at your own home. I will work where you are most comfortable. Our first meeting is free since it is an opportunity for us to get to know one another. I also want my students to feel satisfied; if something is not working, I will do whatever is needed to make it right.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

I have taught Human Anatomy and Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy at the University Level for over 10 years. During this time I have taught Nursing, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy and Pre-Med students.

Biochemistry

I have taught biochemistry at the university level and have conducted enzymology research for over 15 years.

Biology

I have taught many different Biology courses at the University level including cell biology, organismal biology, developmental biology, histology and plant biology

Chemistry

I have taught chemistry, both organic and inorganic, at the high school and University level.

Elementary Math

In addition to my academic qualifications (a Ph.D. in Physiology and Biophysics) I have been involved in elementary and middle school math and science education for many years. I think these are the best ages to teach because the students have not yet become afraid of the topics. Kids are natural scientists and mathematicians- just try to give s child less of something than their siblings and see if they don't do the math quickly! Science is all about asking questions and then figuring out how to answer them. For both subjects I favor a hands on approach. I use a lot of games and activities to make the learning fun. I love these subjects and the kids can pick up on that. I look forward to working with your kids!

In addition to my academic qualifications (a Ph.D. in Physiology and Biophysics), I have been involved in elementary and middle school science education for many years. I think these are the best ages to teach because the students have not yet become afraid of the topics. Kids are natural scientists because science is all about asking questions and then figuring out how to answer them. I ran an after school science club for several years where I used a hands on approach. I use a lot of games and activities to make the learning fun. I love science and the kids can pick up on that. I look forward to working with your kids!

Physiology

I have taught Human Physiology at the University and Medical School level for almost 20 years.

Patient, Knowledgeable, and Flexible

Andrew has been tutoring my daughter for just a very short time. Within that time though he has taught her a great deal of information. Andrew is extremely patient and kind with her, and has learned her strengths and weaknesses very quickly. By doing this he has been able to utilize key strategies on how to best approach her way of learning. I am truly impressed.
