About Heather

Hi and welcome to my profile. My name is Heather. I am a recent graduate of the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh with an MA in international affairs focusing on human rights policy. I am well-versed in history, government structures, and global politics.

My teaching style focuses on critical thinking skills. I want students to understand that this is not just about memorization of dates, places, and amendments, but the events and structures that have shaped our world. I try keep material interesting through story telling and finding ways the student can relate. I use metaphor or examples to explain foreign concepts.

I taught computer skills and sales techniques professionally prior to my graduate education. I also have experience in tech support. I have a customer service attitude and tremendous patience.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Computer

Worked with computers for over 20 years in Windows, Mac, and Linux environments. Experience building computers and troubleshooting hardware and software issues. Experience using a wide variety of office and personal use software, and the ability to learn new software quickly.

Government & Politics

I have a master's degree in a subcategory of political science called International Affairs. The focus of this degree is on policy analysis, which is the basis for policy decisions. I am versed in government structure, legislative process, and politics regarding both public and foreign policy.

Macintosh

I have owned a Macbook Pro since 2010 and an iPad 3rd gen since July of 2012. I'm comfortable with OS X 10.7 to current. I am familiar with terminal commands in both Mac and Linux. I can also troubleshoot software.

Philosophy

My first university degree was in philosophy. It was a wide overview of from ancient to post-modern. My particular areas of interest are basic logic and it's application to general reasoning and writing skills, existentialism, and metaphysics. I can help a student understand a text and critically dissect it.

World History

I have taken world history on the graduate level. I can quickly prepare to tutor a student on the history of specific country, discuss the rise and fall of empires, and explain why countries have long standing animosities. I understand the concept of nation states and sovereignty from my master's degree in international affairs.
