Recommendation from a retired member of the teaching faculty at University of Rhode Island:
“I am writing to recommend Richard Tuoni for a position as a part time instructor. I have known Richard for the past 11 years, and though he has never been a student of mine, I feel very comfortable in recommending him highly. As a teacher educator, it is very important to me that talented and well-prepared teachers deliver instructional programs to students. I know that Richard has many characteristics that serve him well as a teacher.”
I have taught Spanish II and III classes at Central Falls High School, at Exeter-West Greenwich, High School, and at the Senior Center in Wakefield Rhode Island.
I have also taught English as a Second Language classes locally and in Spain and Cameroon, West Africa. This opportunity enables me to experience the great amount of preparation that goes into quality instruction. I have traveled and spent extended times in other countries. I am intellectually curious and an avid reader.
My background uniquely prepares me to teach both English and Spanish. I also have a Masters Degree in American History.
Richard Recommendation from a retired member of the teaching faculty at University of Rhode Island:
“I am writing to recommend Richard Tuoni for a position as a part time instructor. I have known Richard for the past 11 years, and though he has never been a student of mine, I feel very comfortable in recommending him highly. As a teacher educator,
It was a great lesson! I learned about the pronunciation of Spanish words and letters which I did not know much about. We also covered an ESL lesson plan which was very helpful and informative.
I have been playing chess for 50 years. I have taught all five of my children the game, and they still play as adults. I have played in tournaments in New York and Rhode Island. My chess ranking was 1650 when I stopped playing competitive chess. As one player of 20 who competed in a simultaneous exhibition against then state champion, Thornley, I was one of three players to get a draw with him. My game was published in the Providence Journal. I played the French Defense to get the draw.
I studied Attic Greek as a freshman in college. I continued with classical studies with a course in the Latin poets and Ovid's Metamorphoses. For the past 8 years I have led a seminar at the Wakefield Senior Center in Classical Mythology, The Iliad, The Odyssey, Ancient Civilizations of Asia Minor, and the lives of famous Greeks. I have studied Hesiod as well as Homer and am familiar with Babylonian Mythology.
English is my native language. In addition, I teach Spanish and some Italian, and am well acquainted with the structure of the Romance Languages. I have also studied Ancient Greek. With such a background, I can give students an appreciation of the history and lore of the English language as they learn.
I earned a certificate to teach English to Speakers of foreign languages from ITC, Barcelona, Spain.
I also worked 15 years as ESL instructor at Genesis Center, Providence, at CCRI, at Taco Industries, Tiffany's, and Rhode Island College. In addition, I have a B.S. from St. Joseph's University and a M.A in American History from U of Rhode Island.
I speak and write in English and Spanish and have worked as a technical writer. I am sure that I can assist you with your studies.
I have over 5 years formal classroom Spanish and have applied what I learned by teaching Spanish at the high school level, to the nursing staff of St. Joseph's Hospital in Providence, and at New England Tech. I started a conversational Spanish program at the Wakefield Senior Center which has been ongoing for 7 or 8 years. I like to first impart the structure of the language by explaining its grammar and syntax, expand vocabulary and then work on pronunciation and speaking.
