University of Rhode Island (Elementary Education)
I am 26 years old, and a recent graduate of the University of Rhode Island. I have a Bachelor's degree in elementary education (certified to teach in Rhode Island grades 1-6), as well as a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. I have experience working with children aged newborn-17. In addition to being highly trained in all subjects on the elementary level, I also have experience tutoring and providing helpful techniques for high-stakes exams such as the SAT's, ACTs, etc.
I currently substitute teach in the North Kingstown School District, and will be expanding during the following school year. I love teaching and tutoring because I truly believe learning can be fun, engaging and productive for every student, if each students' individual needs and differences is honored. Being a mother, myself, has really helped me grow and shape the kind of teacher/ tutor that I am because it has motivated me to be the kind of educator that I would want for my own child. As an educator, it is my job to shape my teaching methods around the individual needs of my student and make their success my top priority.
I have been trained and certified as an elementary educator for grades 1-6. I successfully completed Elementary Math Methods course with an A average during my degree program. I am trained in standard algorithms, as well as common core. I enjoy creatively implementing hands on manipulatives into my lessons, if it benefits the learning needs of my student.
Utilizing proper English and grammar is a passion of mine. I enjoy revising, editing, and practicing proper grammar. I maintained an A average in the English Language Arts portion of my degree program. I was also named, by my Reading teacher, one of five total "Grammar Police" in middle school. :-)
I was thoroughly trained in the Common Core State Standards during my degree program, having had to align common core standards to all of my lesson plans. I have the common core standards app right in my smart phone! I also student taught in a school that bases their curriculum on Common Core State Standards. Common Core is an incredible way to teach students to think deeply and critically in all aspects of their education, including mathematics.
I am certified to teach grades 1-6 in Rhode Island. My degree program rigorously trained us in Elementary Mathematics, English Language Arts, Social Studies, as well as Science. My Science Methods professor is one of the heads of Gems Net Science program. I volunteered at the Gems Net Family Science Expo held at URI this past April.
Please feel free to contact me with any more questions! I love to find ways to make learning fun, hands on, and interesting, and I hope to hear from you soon! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
