I recently moved to Rhode Island to be closer to my family, but I have spent the last three years working at a learning center called Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes in New York. There, I have worked with students of all ages building reading & language skills, comprehension, and math. I have worked with many students with different learning disabilities including dyslexia, ADHD, Autism Spectrum, and oppositional defiant disorder. I believe in creating a relaxed and fun learning environment. I am confident that I can help any student improve his or her reading level.

I also have experience teaching English language learners. I always do my best to adapt my lesson plans to whatever the student needs. I have taken classes toward earning a Master's degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at LIU Brooklyn. This program taught me how to provide the necessary support for non-native English speakers to learn classroom content.

Please contact me to schedule a meeting. I look forward to meeting all potential students.

ESL/ESOL

I am currently a graduate student in the Teaching English to Speakers of Other languages program at LIU Brooklyn. I have volunteered to teach adults in ESL. I am trained in the SIOP and CALLA methods for teaching content to English language learners.

Elementary Education

Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I have been trained in the SIOP and CALLA methods for teaching math to English language learners. I feel that many of these approaches are relevant to all students. I think that the most important part of math is learning how to break the problem down into steps. I think the one-on-one element of tutoring can be valuable to learning math. When I begin tutoring math, I will use games and visuals to help stimulate interest.

I believe that all teachers are reading teachers. I have gained classroom experience at LIU Brooklyn learning methods to teach reading. I believe that both phonics and whole language approaches should be utilized.

Writing

I have a strong understanding of what teachers want from student writing. I currently work for an online company that works with schools to grade student essays. I know that academic writing is probably the most challenging and important skill to long-term academic success. I want to help students learn to express themselves more clearly through writing.

Homeschool

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I had a lot of success in Algebra when I was in school. I recently acquired a used textbook that will help refresh my memory of the different aspects. I think that utilizing the student's textbook and homework will be a good place to start when tutoring Algebra.

Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I have always liked word problems and problem solving in mathematics. Last summer, I tutored one of my cousins in Prealgebra after she struggled in an advanced 7th grade math class. I think that using visuals and allowing kids to make their own visuals is an important strategy to this subject. I think that one-on-one help is particularly useful in subjects like Prealgebra, where learning to break down a problem into steps is the key.
