Bio

I was a graduate student in mathematics at Caltech and a postdoc at Columbia University. I left academia to work in industry, but I enjoy teaching. I have written dozens of articles and a book on applying mathematics for general audiences. I'm working on a parent's guide to algebra and book on applying economics to improve environmentalism. I've tutored mathematics, statistics, economics, computer science, and programming since 2013 on other sites.

I've tutored mathematics, statistics, economics, computer science, and programming since 2013 on other sites.

My goal is to make the material make sense to you. Does it work? Sometimes. I had a 200:1 positive:negative review ratio. I'm constantly trying to improve.

As a graduate student and postdoc, I was a teaching assistant for and then taught calculus, linear algebra, combinatorics, probability, and multivariable calculus, among others. I also coached Caltech's Putnam team and I can help with contest mathematics. I usually tutor college students, but I have also tutored many high school students and a few graduate students.

I am available both for online and live lessons.

Discrete Math,

Discrete Math

Combinatorics was one of my favorite subjects in college and I enjoyed taking three courses on it in the Budapest Semesters in Mathematics program. I wrote my senior thesis in combinatorial design theory. I took and was a TA for advanced combinatorics classes in graduate school. I have tutored students both for discrete math classes for computer science majors (covering things like Turing machines) and discrete mathematics classes which are alternatives to calculus (emphasizing things like proofs by induction and Euclid's algorithm).
Finite Math,

Finite Math

I have tutored many students in finite mathematics over the past four years. I have also tutored subjects that use the ideas covered in finite mathematics courses. I can help whether your finite mathematics course focuses on logic and set theory, probability and statistics, or linear programming.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

I used linear algebra throughout the core graduate classes in mathematics (abstract algebra, analysis, and topology/geometry). I apply linear algebra professionally within Machine Learning. I have tutored students both in calculation-based and proof-based linear algebra courses.

Poker

Poker

I used to play poker professionally, concentrating on Hold'em variants. I preferred to coach and coached many of the Sit-N-Go (SNG) players at the top of the Sharkscope leaderboards, including one player who went from not knowing whether a flush beat a straight to the dominant player on Full Tilt's medium stakes SNGs. I made dozens of instructional videos for StoxPoker (which merged with CardRunners) and PokerStrategy. I co-authored a book, The Math of Hold'em, aimed at poker players, covering mathematical aspects of poker strategy, analysis, and bankroll management. I wrote ICM Explorer, a program for investigating the Independent Chip Model of tournament equity.

Patient and knowledgeable

Douglas was great. He helped us work through some statistics for a research project. He is very patient, knowledgeable, and explained everything clearly. He took time with us and answered all our questions. Highly recommend!!

Great teacher!!

Douglas is an amazing teacher and I recommend asking for his help!!!! I told him I needed him on Monday morning and I had an appointment scheduled for Tuesday afternoon! I thought the assignment I needed help on was going to take multiple sessions but Douglas helped me understand it in one hour and a half lesson!!! And I got 100% on my assignment, which I could have never achieved without his help and understanding!! If you need the help, Douglas is DEFINITELY worth it!!

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

Douglas was very patient and able to break down basic concepts of decision theory. I did not have a background in statistics and he was able to explain it and relate it to the real world.

A genius who knew infinity

First and foremost, Douglas is a very smart, talented guy, and a genius from my perspective. He can solve all types of tough problems in college level applied math and engineering math and even capable of extending this ability to graduate level. I had many tutors in Wyzant but almost none of them can answer all my problems in a sufficient level. Douglas is the first guy who can do so. Secondly, he knows how to teach! he can approach the problems in a way that students can understand with their limited knowledge base. Lastly, he is very focus and responsible during the session that makes u feel every minute worth the penny you u paid.

Knowledgeable and Provided clear explanations

I learned how to use Excel to create and solve word linear programming problems. He made it super simple and has extensive knowledge in the area, this was evident in his tutoring session.

Great experience

Douglas is one of the best Statistic/math tutor. He knew the subject very well and helped me understand the statistics on my paper. He is patient and explains everything clearly!

Elisabeth, 4 lessons with Douglas

Very knowledgeable and concise

Was able to show clearly how to solve the difficult problem in a relatively short period of time. Explanation of concepts, his analysis and ensuing strategy for solving were excellent. Will definitely use him again.

AMAZING tutor

Great tutor, always provides accurate and clear solutions to hard problems. Also kind, patient, and funny. Douglas helped me with my linear programming problem sets and string matching problems.

Beyond Impeccable With Excel

Douglas is a life-saver, he's proficient, well knowledgeable and professional. He doesn't waste time, gets to the point as the clock was ticking. He knows his "stuff!" I needed an assignment as the last minute and he delivered, 1,000%!!! If you have a last-minute deadline that needs a first or second look, he is your guy!!! He made my day, NO more stressing!!! 10 stars.

Knowledge, patient, and kind tutor

Douglas was really willing to make time for me, even though he was already very busy which I really appreciated. He's good at explaining problems and answers questions as well as asks what we know and think the solution might be and helps work out what problems together at a good pace.
