About Matthew

I am a 2012 graduate of Brown University who is pursuing a career as an orchestral and opera conductor. I love my career because I love working with people and inspiring them to give their best performance. I want to inspire you to reach your greatest academic potential. I have a lot of experience working with people in one-on-one settings as an opera coach, and always strive to maintain a focused but collegial environment.

In addition to the coursework I completed at Brown as part of my music degree, I also took courses in ten unrelated departments, including Math, Biology, Chemistry, Cognitive Science, English, Italian, and Religious Studies. I am definitely one who likes to learn for learning's sake, and hope to be able to help you to not only develop learning skills and skills in certain subject areas, but a passion for learning as well.

I can help you prepare for college entrance exams, a variety of specific subjects (especially math, science, and English/writing) , and help you craft and edit your college essays.

I got a 730 on both the SAT I Math and SAT II Math II (2008), a 33 on the ACT Math, as well as a 5 on AP Calculus BC.

I got a 34 on ACT Writing (2008), 720 on SAT I Writing, 680 on SAT I Critical Reading (2008) and a 4 on AP English Literature.

I have a very flexible schedule, and could meet most times during the week. I also have a car, and am willing to travel to you. I am eagerly looking forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

I have a Bachelor's degree in Music from Brown and a Master's degree in Orchestral Conducting from Mannes College of Music. I completed two years of Ear Training and Dictation at Brown, and another two at Mannes. I have a very good ear, can play the piano, and am fluent in clef reading and fixed do solfege.

General Music

I have a Bachelor's degree in Music from Brown, and a Master's degree in Orchestral Conducting from Mannes College of Music. I have taken a wide variety of courses in music history, musicology, music theory, ear training, keyboard, and dictation. I also have a thorough knowledge of the orchestral, operatic, and choral repertoire.

Music History

I took music history courses as part of my music degree at Brown University. At Mannes, I took a variety of music history electives. My classroom knowledge has been augmented by my career as a conductor, as I have conducted music from every era from the Renaissance to the 20th and 21st Centuries.

Saxophone

I have played the saxophone from age 10, and studied privately for five years. I was a member of both the wind ensemble and jazz band in high school, and continued with jazz band through college. I also was featured with the Brown Orchestra on a piece for which a saxophone was needed.

Swimming

I swam competitively from ages 8 to 18, including ages 11 to 18 on a USA Swimming year round club team. I coached a team at my local swim club for two years while in college. I have been training and competing as a member of US Masters Swimming for the past four years.
