About Amanda

I am an English teacher and very passionate about teaching English as a second language. I completed a four week intensive class in teaching English as a foreign language at the Boston Language Institute.

Last year, after graduating high school, I taught English in Rome, Italy for a year. I taught an hour and a half class every day, and was available for another three hours per day to tutor smaller groups or individual students. I will be attending Brown University in the fall. I am planning on studying Linguistics.

I am back in Boston and very eager to help you with whatever you need with your English. I have materials and lessons that are ready and have been tested, such as grammar worksheets, and interesting readings that we can talk about. I am prepared to help you with reading, writing, listening, grammar and conversation. I have a very flexible schedule.

I can work with any age group. I have more experience working with adults, but I have experience working with children from babysitting and working in a nursery.

I believe in full immersion while tutoring. We will speak only in English and I will help you understand new grammatical concepts and vocabulary through engaging with materials actively. For example, instead of telling you what the past perfect tense is, we will read an essay or story together that uses the past perfect in a clear way. Then we will practice it until you feel you understand it. I like to make use of many different sources--tv shows, podcasts, stories and songs. The most important thing is that you feel engaged and excited to learn English. I want to work with you to build a learning plan that will work best for you.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
