About Alexandra

I fell in love with tutoring as a junior in high school, when I started working with groups of middle school students to help them have fun with math.

Since then, I have volunteered as a math tutor for local elementary, middle and high school students; worked as a private tutor for middle school, high school and college students students taking Pre-Algebra through Calculus; taught Pre-Calculus to a homeschooled high school student; and tutored college math students at Brown University's Math Resource Center. I have also taught basic conversational French to beginners, and more advanced French to higher-level learners. In other words, I have a lot of experience teaching students of any age, and I enjoy working with all of them!

I get as excited about teaching as I do about my own studies, and that's saying something. Whenever I learn a concept, I break it down and my own mind and ask: how would I teach this to myself? Then, once I have systematically processed it, I am able to break it down for another student and build it up in a way that makes sense to him/her. I apply this philosophy to both mathematical and grammatical ideas.

As a current student, I understand what it's like to learn new, complicated concepts, and I bring my experience as a learner to each lesson I teach. At Brown, where I study Mathematics and French, I am surrounded by other students who share my passions, and we all benefit enormously from sharing ideas and enthusiasm -- just as my students and I both gain from working together. Over my three years of tutoring, I have found that every time I work with a student, I learn a different aspect of my own field. I strongly believe that everyone has the capacity to enjoy and to excel in any area -- math included -- and I do my utmost to make sure that students of all ages are successful in both pursuits.

I specialize in Pre-Algebra and Algebra I/II, Pre-Calculus and Calculus I/II, and Linear Algebra, as well as elementary and test-prep math (especially for AP Calculus and the math portion of the SAT). I am also comfortable working with French students of any level, from total beginners to students who have been studying French for years.

Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have worked with many Algebra students, including both those who have trouble with the material and those who need a greater challenge. This has allowed me a wide view of how students process the course, and how to approach teaching difficult ideas, like the concept of a function. I have also worked with many Pre-Algebra and Algebra II students, giving me great knowledge of students' backgrounds and how to prepare them for future math.

Calculus

I work in Brown University's Math Resource Center, where students taking Calculus 1, 2 or 3 come for help. In addition to tutoring these students, I have privately tutored a student taking Calculus 1 to help him understand the larger ideas behind Calculus as well as the specific course material.

French

I have taught basic oral French to a recent college graduate, focusing on conversational skills and daily vocabulary to prepare her for living in Paris as an Au Pair nanny. I have also helped a homeschooled high school junior prepare for the DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française) exams. I've been studying French for over 8 years and have taken 8 upper-level French courses, covering literature, creative writing and linguistics, among other areas. I also received an 800 on the French SAT.

Linear Algebra

I have taken two rigorous Linear Algebra courses, one at Oberlin College and one at Brown University. I have also worked with students taking both Linear Algebra and Honors Linear Algebra as a tutor at Brown's Math Resource Center.

Prealgebra

For a year, I ran math sessions for middle school students taking Pre-Algebra, Algebra and Geometry. At the same time, I worked privately with a rising 8th grader, who had never taken Pre-Algebra, to prepare him for Algebra in the fall. I also tutored a 7th grader who intended to take Pre-Algebra in 8th grade. After working with me for a year, she had developed an understanding of functions, equations and other critical Algebra concepts.

Precalculus

I have taught Precalculus to a homeschooled high school student, covering all standard course material through limits and derivatives. I have also privately tutored many Precalculus students to help them succeed in the course and to prepare them for Calculus.
