About Jessica

Hello! I am a future teacher with a bachelors degree from San Diego State University (where I graduated summa cum laude and with distinction in my major) and am attending an Ivy League university for my masters degree. I have tutored professionally for over 6 years. I worked at a high school as a tutor working with students of all backgrounds in math, science, English, writing, and history. I have also been employed as a tutor for disadvantaged elementary and middle school students in math and English Language Arts. Additionally, I worked at Space Camp Turkey as an International Educator teaching space science, engineering, and technology. I have a wide array of subjects that I tutor. I enjoy tutoring because each student is different and I love working with every student to improve their abilities and skills.

I usually start off a lesson by asking my students to tell me what they are struggling with. Once they have identified their weakest areas, I start off with easy problems or questions. I gradually increase the difficulty of questions. Then, after I feel that they have successfully mastered the topic, I ask them to teach it to me. If a student can teach a topic, then they truly have mastered it.

Please look under my "tutoring subjects" heading to find out which subjects I am currently tutoring.

Please contact me to find out more about my schedule and the specific types of lessons I provide. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have worked with students of varying level of skill with the ACT English section. I have tutored over 100 hours with this section of the test and have a deep familiarity with the types of questions the test asks. With each student, I have raised their score a minimum of 2 points.

ACT Math

As an ACT tutor for the past five years, I have a great deal of familiarity with the ACT Math exam. I regularly take the practice tests to learn about different kinds of questions the ACT asks.

ADHD

I have worked with students who have ADHD as both a student teacher and a tutor. I understand that students with ADHD need movement breaks as well as patience on the part of the teacher. I make sure I take a careful approach to each student's situation to maximize their learning. I also work with parents and the students to identify areas of strength that we can work with.

Algebra 1

I have tutored students from all backgrounds with algebra 1. I make sure my students have a deeper concept understanding of algebra instead of just being able to solve formulas. All of math builds upon itself, and I set students up for success in the near and distant future.

Algebra 2

I tutored Algebra 2 at the high school level for 2 years. A lot of my students came in struggling with many concepts but by the end of the school year, they had increased their understanding and greatly improved their grades. Students worked on concepts such as graphing log and exponential functions, finding interest, and arithmetic with polynomials.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

As a student teacher in school districts around the country, I have worked with students who have ASD. I first get to know the student and work with them individually to assess their current ability and work with their parents to discuss their strengths. Next, I create goals with them for the future. I hope to work with your student!

CBEST

As a future teacher, I was required to take the CBEST. I studied intensely for the test and received a passing score. On my detailed score report, I got exemplary scores in all of the sections. I can tutor this subject well because I can target and improve a student's weaknesses in each section of the test.

When I do a lesson, I start off by identifying their weaknesses and I provide the student with sample questions. We work on the questions and increase the difficulty over time.

Common Core

As a future elementary school teacher, I have been trained in Common Core. I work with students in math and reading/writing most frequently. I have a deep knowledge of the standards and how to apply them.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a student teacher at an elementary school in Providence and obtaining my masters in elementary education at Brown University. I have spent 200+ hours in K-6 classrooms volunteering and teaching. Furthermore, I have privately tutored students in the primary grades.

Elementary Math

I have tutored professionally at the elementary school level for 2 years. I have spent time in elementary classrooms volunteering and teaching math. My knowledge of the Common Core State Standards allows me to tailor my teaching to the student's needs.

English

I love to tutor English because everyone has a different command over the language. I have a background in linguistics, writing, and reading. With these skills, I tailor my lessons to each student's needs.

GED

I have worked with four students to help them pass their GED. We focused mainly on core content areas like math and English. Secondly, we also worked together on key test-taking skills. I worked with students to make sure they were prepared to take this basic skills test and feel adequately prepared.

Geometry

At a local high school, I tutored students in geometry. I worked with students who were failing the subject and helped them improve their grades by working on basic understanding. I taught them how to do proofs, the different geometric theorems, and finding the equations of graphs.

Homeschool

I have worked with homeschooled students in the past. I make sure to align my curriculum with state standards. I find innovate and fun resources to engage my students.

Macintosh

As a Macintosh owner for the past 5 years, I have a deep knowledge of the software. I do troubleshooting frequently. Making sure that your Mac is easy to use is the first priority for me.

Phonics

I have taken advanced linguistics classes at San Diego State University that include units on phonics. I work with English as a Second Language (ESL) students in a kindergarten classroom. My knowledge of phonemes helps me teach students who struggle with sounds and reading.

Prealgebra

I have tutored pre-algebra at the middle school and high school level for the past six years. I have helped students improve their grades, understanding, and conceptual knowledge. I have word with students on functions, graphing, and basic calculations.

Public Speaking

I have done numerous speaking engagements that have audiences that range from 10-200 people. My public speaking experiences include doing presentations, reading speeches, and emceeing events.

Also, I have taken Oral Communication classes at San Diego State University. My tips and tricks that I learned for public speaking will help anyone get over their fear and become a successful orator.

Reading

As an avid reader and writer, I have an extensive knowledge of the English language. I am taking advanced linguistics classes at San Diego State University. Also, I am in process of earning my Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) certificate. I love encouraging students of all ages to escape into the exciting world of reading and storytelling.

Social Studies

I have worked with students doing social studies at various elementary schools I have volunteered at. Also, I have taken college classes (such as geography) that contribute to my subject knowledge. I have gone over different curricula used in social studies classes at various age levels.

Study Skills

I work with students often on study skills. I know how to help them organize their notes and materials in order to help them stay on top of their work. Additionally, I often help them with test-taking strategies. My methods include taking notes in the margin and writing self-study questions.

World History

I have taken AP world history in high school. I received a 4 on the national AP Word History exam. I have a deep love for world history. For history, I usually help my students understand the different events and time periods by relating the subjects to current world events. I work with each student and cater towards their individual needs.

Writing

As part of my coursework for my masters program at Brown, I complete creative and academic writing assignments all the time. Additionally, I have tutored students in writing for the past six years. I advocate a growth-mindset and work towards building comfortability with writing.
