About Allison

I am an experienced tutor offering assistance in English, ESL and SAT prep to students of all ages and abilities. I recently graduated from SUNY New Paltz, where I earned my degree in English with a concentration in Creative Writing.

I tutored my fellow college students in English and ESL at the New Paltz Tutoring Center for three years. I also volunteered at Let's Get Ready, a non-profit SAT prep program that serves underprivileged high schoolers, as a Verbal Coach. I've spent the past three summers working as a camp counselor for children ages 3-5.

Strong reading comprehension and writing skills are important in any discipline. I strive to instill a sense of confidence in my students and equip them with the skills they need to succeed. I work hard to find the best individualized approach for each student by assessing their individual needs, identifying areas of weakness and encouraging their strengths.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

As an English literature and Creative Writing major, I read books spanning all genres and wrote countless essays. I offer students from all academic disciplines and at all grade levels a wealth of strategies to better their reading comprehension skills and essay-writing abilities. I focus on my students' individual needs and interests and help strengthen their skills through discussion, quizzes and games.

ESL/ESOL

I have tutored ESL students from a variety of cultural backgrounds and at all levels. I work closely with my students to improve their English speaking, reading and writing abilities by focusing on grammar and vocabulary. My aim is to help non-native speakers become more confident in their English skills by pinpointing their individual needs and finding the best way to approach them.

Grammar

My educational background in English combined with my life-long love of reading has equipped me with strong grammar skills. I pinpoint whatever my students struggle with the most, both individually and as a group, and focus on these topics the most. I like to keep grammar lessons interesting by switching it up between drills, short quizzes, and writing exercises.

Literature

I love books and try to read as many genres and authors as I can. As an English major, I studied English and American literature extensively, but my knowledge extends to other cultures as well. I help students who struggle with reading comprehension and other issues pertaining to assigned books through discussion and writing exercises.

Reading

Reading skills are necessary in academics and beyond, but can be difficult to master for some. I have been an avid reader since childhood and love to share my passion with others. I offer students of all ages the guidance and strategies they need to become better readers, which in turn will make them better writers.

SAT Reading

As a Coach for Let's Get Ready, I created weekly lesson plans on the Verbal section of the SAT for a class of eight students. I strove to create lessons that were comprehensive, interesting and fun! I am well-versed in the new SAT and prepared to answer students' questions and offer a number of strategies and techniques for success.

SAT Writing

I am well-versed in the new SAT and prepared to answer students' questions and offer a number of strategies and techniques for success. I can also help students prepare, write and edit their personal essays for college applications.

Spelling

Spelling is one of many components that leads to strong writing. I help students build up their spelling skills with writing exercises, fun activities and short quizzes. I encourage students to continue to improve by reading and writing on their own time as much as they can.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is one of the many components that leads to stronger writing and better reading. I help students build up their vocabulary with flashcards, exercises, fun activities and short quizzes. I encourage students to continue to improve on their own time by reading as much as they can.

Writing

As a Composition tutor at my college's tutoring center, I helped students from all academic disciplines write and edit essays. I help writers improve their grammar, spelling and vocabulary, and offer guidance in finding the best way to approach any topic. I can also help aspiring writers improve their more creative pieces, from fictional stories to poetry!
