About Leslie

I enjoy teaching so much because I like to learn and to share what I've learned. As an undergraduate, I got two degrees (Zoology and Botany) and had almost enough credits for a third degree in history. I went on to get a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of California at San Diego.

I have considerable experience teaching biology courses to high school and college students. This includes introductory biology classes covering topics such as molecular biology, organismal biology, plant biology, and evolutionary biology. I also have considerable experience teaching specialized biology courses. These include genetics, cell biology, human physiology, microbiology, and neuroscience. Phrased differently, these topics could be called: inheritance, how your cells work, how your body works, microbes that cause infections, and how your brain works.

Most of my experience comes from teaching at Assumption College and Boston University, where in the summer we teach high school AP students. This teaching is not merely in-class, but also involves extensive tutoring outside of class. Because I've taught high school students through college seniors of diverse backgrounds, I understand how to pitch tutoring to the needs of each individual student. I also understand the importance of a student feeling comfortable with the teaching situation, and so am willing to travel to the student's home. I receive very high ratings from my students, and those I tutor do very well on their exams.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

The introductory biology classes I've taught cover topics such as molecular biology, organismal biology, plant biology, and evolutionary biology. The advanced courses include genetics, neuroscience, microbiology, and human physiology.

Botany

I have a B.S. in Botany from the University of Washington. I have also taught topics related to botany in introductory biology classes. These topics include: how chloroplasts function, seed dispersal mechanisms, and adaption to ecological niches.

Genetics

I have taught genetics at both Boston University and Assumption College. The designation of the BU course is BI 206. The designation of the Assumption course is Bio 105 (& the course name is "Human Heredity").

Zoology

I also have a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Washington. I have taught numerous topics related to zoology in introductory biology classes and in more specialized classes. These topics include: general physiology, adaption to ecological niches, and evolutionary biology. The intro bio courses I've taught include BI 108 at Boston University, and Bio 160 at Assumption College. If you'd like the full list of courses I've taught and the names and contact information for my department chairs, please let me know.
