About Jenna

I have two bachelors degrees, one in Applied Mathematics and one in Earth Science. I am currently attending Brown university to obtain a PhD in Earth, Environmental and Planetary Sciences with a focus in oceanography.

For mathematics, my strengths are in calculus, linear algebra and ODE/PDE. I have also taken courses in abstract algebra, discrete mathematics, real and complex analysis, number theory, geometry and numerical analysis. For earth science, I generally focus on global climate and weather as well as physical oceanography but I have taken coursework in physical geology, mineralogy, sedimentology as well as geotectonics. My experience in these courses has been developed by research I have completed at Harvard University on statistical genetics as well as Brown University in traffic modeling.

I have been a tutor at my undergraduate institution my entire academic career, and have also worked as a peer leader for groups of students. While deployed in Iraq I served as a tutor for applied sciences in the education center on base. This past summer I was involved in Northeastern Illinois University's EMERGE program, which is designed to aid entering freshman in the transition to college level mathematics. I also taught a GRE prep course for the quantitative section of the test during that time.

Overall I am very easy going and really have aspirations to teach, so tutoring is something I don't just do on the side but something that I really enjoy and am passionate about!

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve your academic goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I have passed the algebra test offered by WyzAnt and have been tutoring students requiring work in algebra for quite some time. When I tutored at my institution during my undergrad, many of the students I attended to were struggling with pre-college concepts. This enabled me to develop good techniques for tutoring the basics.

Differential Equations

I have taken two semesters of ordinary differential equations and one semester of partial differential equations. I received an A in all of these courses. I have been exposed to Differential equations in my modeling courses, physics courses and research as well.

Discrete Math

I have taken one semester of Discrete Math, plus two semesters of advanced analysis and one of complex analysis for which the tools learn in such a class are implemented. I received an A for each of those courses. I have a B.S. in both Applied Mathematics and Earth Science.

Finite Math

I have tutored finite math at my university for 2 years. I have also taken upper level linear algebra, probability and statistics as well as discrete math.

Linear Algebra

I have taken one semester of Linear Algebra and received an A. I have also used it extensively in MATLAB programming over the last year. I also have a B.S. in both Applied Mathematics and Earth Science.

MATLAB

I have been programming for around four years (one full year of coursework, three research based), and MATLAB is the primary language used in my PhD research.

Prealgebra

I have passed WyzAnt's exams for calculus and algebra and I have an extensive background in both these areas. I was a peer leader for both calculus I and college algebra at my undergrad institution for about three years. During that time I also tutored at the library of my school for subjects from pre-college math through calculus III. Additionally, I know math can be hard to study for, and I have developed some excellent techniques over the years that have proven successful in my courses.

Supportive and positive with a deep understanding of calculus

Calculus 2 was easily the most difficult math class I have ever taken. After doing poorly on my midterm I enlisted Jenna to help me understand concepts and better utilize the calculator that was allowed in my exams. Not only did she solve particular problems like you would expect from a good tutor, but she wrote out sequences and series concepts in a way that was more concise and readable than m
