About David

I have just relocated to Brooklyn, NY from Providence, RI, where I taught US History (and after school puppetry) at a small alternative high school for three years, where a combination of class size and school philosophy allowed me to meet the students as individuals. Many students at this school because of the obstacles encountered at their previous schools. Although the students carried these challenges into our school, the culture of the school focused on supporting the students with a goal of greater independence from these hindrances. In addition to the history class work, I worked with students after school as they prepared for the our comprehensive exams in math and the humanities (a graduation requirement).

Outside of school, I write for performance (both puppet and human) and build puppet shows for audiences of all ages. This is a skill and a passion that I would be excited to share with students that may provide additional benefit for particular students that are struggling with self expression. Please note that I am not licensed as an art therapist, nor have I studied art therapy. I can only speak to what I have encountered in my own experience as a teacher, a tutor and artist that strives to start each working relationship by listening to the student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have three years experience helping high school students with a variety of subjects, both in small groups and one-on-one. Although my classroom teaching has been in history, I have found success tutoring students in math. I believe lessons from someone that is not coming from a math background provides a useful alternative to those students struggling with the subject.

American History

I teach US History at a small alternative high school in Providence, RI. The students represented a wide range of ages, skills and backgrounds. Although largely a general survey course, I did include: alternate readings of the same subject or period (using Zinn's A People's History of The United States alongside a more traditional text), supplemental background material from the period (such as John Locke and other Enlightenment writers), current events in their relationship to subject material (particularly when reinforcing Constitutional issues) and examples of the arts as America started to develop its own styles of visual and literary expression.

European History

During my classroom teaching of US History, I emphasized that events in North America did not occur in a vacuum, but rather that US History is part of world history.

Some ways I explored this with students:

Introduce the students to ideas presented in Jared Diamond's book Guns, Germs and Steel, in particular the question "How did North America become the continent that Europeans displaced the indigenous population and colonized with the aid of slave labor from Africa?"

I start the US History timeline with Black Plague in Europe and present how this event changed the relationship between Europeans and the Catholic Church, opening the door for bigger political changes later.

I present the development of the arts in America in context to what was happening elsewhere in the world. Sometimes we carried on a tradition from elsewhere early intact, sometimes our landscape and people and politics altered those inherited traditions, sometimes we blended two foreign traditions, sometimes we spawned something that was then borrowed by the rest of the world.

In addition to these elements that have found my way into US History teaching, I also have dug into European History both modern and ancient for my own enjoyment and for my writing. One current art project that I am working on focuses on European history is a play that focuses on World War One.

Prealgebra

Although my classroom teaching has been in history, I have found success tutoring students in math.
