Rhode Island College (English and Italian)
Hello, potential students! My name is Alex. I am in my early 30s, a Providence resident, and a graduate of Rhode Island College, complete with fancy honors and a double major. I love music, travel, cooking, and conveniently also English Literature and Italian, as those are the subjects I am offering my services in. It is this passion that I feel makes me an excellent choice for your tutor needs.
English was always my favorite subject in high school, and it is something I have always known would define my future. I believe English class can be more than simply dry texts and stressful essays. Let's explore your texts and try to figure out what is being said, and perhaps more importantly, why it needs saying... sometimes casual discussion can open doors that the stress of a grade cannot. If you tend to get hung up on the writing more than the reading, I have experience as a writing center tutor that I can bring to your pending assignments. I am lucky to have no shortage of former professors willing to vouch for my competence, both in my writing and my discussion. These references can be provided upon request, but I am looking forward to hearing from you, the students.
Italian, on the other hand, is something I will always feel like a student in myself, given that it is my second language. For this reason, I feel most comfortable working with first or second year students, though I am happy to consider advanced students as well. However, I do have experience dating back to my own high-school language studies. I have studied in Florence, and upon graduation I embarked on a month long journey through the country. I count myself lucky to have had these opportunities, especially since my time abroad has helped strengthen my fluency and my confidence, as well as allowed me exposure to many aspects of Italian culture. I have numerous outlets through which we can explore Italian, or we can simply work on vocabulary and grammar. With a second language, it is all about practice. Even with many years under my belt, it is usage that helps keep me sharp. Let's find a reason to use Italian together.
Given my experience in these fields, my style tends to be collaborative: I want to talk with you, hear your questions, learn your thoughts, etc, not simply rattle off knowledge for you to jot down (though you'll get that side of me, too). More importantly, however, I am here to help you. Upon contacting me, let me know if you have specific needs or subjects on which to focus. If you're not sure, let's discuss together. I look forward to being able to help unlock these subjects. Maybe you won't end up abandoning your dreams of becoming a successful doctor or businessperson to pursue the great American novel, but I am confident that with some time and effort, language and literature will no longer feel so daunting. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
