My educational background is varied. I graduated Western Connecticut State College with a Bachelors' degree in Social Science and a minor in History. While attending school full time I also worked at a local high school as a substitute teacher, Senior Independent Study Advisor, and assistant coach for Varsity Boys Soccer, JV Boys Basketball and Varsity Baseball.
From there I attended George Mason University where I received and a Master's in Education with a focus on Secondary Social Studies. As part of my time there, I spent a semester studying abroad at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, where I studied Political Science and History.
Upon returning to the United States, I relocated to Providence, where I now teach 7th grade Eastern World History and 8th grade Western World History. I also have experience with American History, World History, and Government on the High School level. Additionally I have spent time co-authoring curriculum for a High School Civics and Government course for an education non-profit.
Presently, I am certified to teach Secondary Social Studies in both Virginia and Rhode Island and pursuing certification in Massachusetts. As part of my certification, I was required to take the Praxis II: Social Studies General Content Knowledge test achieving a perfect 200 and the Praxis: Principles of Learning and Teaching examination scoring 185 out of 200.
I have strong content knowledge in American History, World History and United States Government/Civics. As a tutor, I believe the key is finding a way to relate the material to students in way that is both engaging and relevant to the students. I feel it is important to learn student interests so I can better figure out ways to approach the material. My educational background is varied. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am certified to teach Social Studies on the secondary level in both Virginia and Rhode Island. I scored a perfect 200 on the Praxis II: Social Studies General Content Knowledge exam. I have an undergraduate degree in Social Science with a History minor and a graduate degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Secondary Social Studies.
Additionally, I have previously taught American History on the secondary level.
I spent four years as a Boys Junior Varsity Assistant Coach. My role was specifically to work with the post players and to develop them for the Varsity level.
Additionally, I was a four year Varsity starter and two time team MVP in high school. I started at either the 2,3 or 4 positions, but also situationally spent time playing at the 1 or 5.
I studied facets of Modern European History at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, specifically the 16th and 17th centuries.
I have experience with 8th grade Civics and teaching 12th grade US Government and AP Government courses. Furthermore, I have previously worked with an education non profit to develop curriculum for a High School level Government and Civics course.
I achieved a perfect 200 on the Praxis II: Social Studies General Content Knowledge test. This resulted in being awarded a Recognition Of Excellence for scoring in the top 15% of all test takers ever.
Additionally, I scored 185 on the Praxis II: Principles of Learning and Teaching exam.
I have one year of experience as a high school Boys Varsity Head Coach and four years experience as a Boys Varsity Assistant Coach.
I have several years experience teaching youth soccer classes for ages 2 to 12. I played Division III Men's Soccer at Keene State College and was an All State player in High School.
While I can work with players of any position, my specialty is Goalkeepers, as that was my primary position. During my four years as Assistant Coach, I had complete autonomy to train the goalkeepers, resulting in a keeper make All-League every year, and two different keepers being honored with the team MVP award.
It is from this time that I have created a personal notebook with over 60 different keeper drills, some from personal experience as a goalkeeper, some found through outside resources, and some that I have created myself. There are drills in place designed to work on all aspects of goalkeeping, including shot blocking, positioning, footwork, technique, crosses, distribution, and breakaways among others.
I currently teach 7th grade Eastern World History, 8th grade Western World History, and have experience teaching 9th grade World History I.
