About Su

I am currently a doctoral student at Brown University and my research revolves around the confluence of genetics, statistics and public health. I also have a Master of Science in Biostatistics from the University of Michigan, which is a top-five program in the U.S. Thus, I particularly specialize in offering tutoring that deals with statistics and genetics.

I am able to provide lessons in linear regression, generalized linear models, human genetics, as well as longitudinal data analysis and categorical statistics. I am also able to teach methods of data analysis and statistical visualizations, where I can supply examples, guided walk-throughs, and an individualized project which will allow the student to practice their newly acquired skills. I am happy to assign review exercises if desired by the student.

I am also able to teach GRE verbal and mathematics, as well as SAT mathematics, verbal, and writing. I have two years of experience teaching high school mathematics and SAT prep through private tutoring in the Washington, D.C. area.

As the oldest sibling in a set of three children, I have spent my whole life playing tutor in some form. I am really great with kids (my youngest brother and I are 14 years apart!) and love to experiment with teaching styles so as to really help my students learn the material rather than memorize it. I believe in the socratic method and teaching students to think deeply about the material that they are learning so that their skills last with them beyond just through the end of their next exam.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. I do generally have a 12 hour cancellation policy, but am happy to arrange makeup classes. Tutoring can take place in local, public locations (e.g coffee shops) or at libraries in the Providence area / near Brown University.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biostatistics

I have my Bachelor of Science in Statistics from Carnegie Mellon University, as well as my Master of Science degree in Biostatistics from the University of Michigan. I have 5 years of research experience using statistical methods, including 1.5 years as a statistical analyst for Carnegie Mellon's Statistics Department and 1 year as a formal statistician for the University of Michigan. I have taught statistics in private settings and have also served as a teaching assistant for statistics courses.

SAT Reading

I received perfect scores in SAT Reading and Writing when I took them for college. Though it has been some time since I took them, I have privately tutored three students in the SAT Writing and Reading sections and was very successful in improving their writing fluency with respect to clarity and style. For the SAT reading section, I was able to help students identify strategies that would work best for them to improve their scores from 100-200 points.

Statistics

I have my B.S. in Economics and Statistics from Carnegie Mellon University, my M.S. in Biostatistics from the University of Michigan, and am now obtaining a PhD in Molecular Epidemiology with a concentration in Statistical Genetics. I have taught Statistics to numerous students, and have several students who achieved perfect scores in the AP Statistics exams after working with me.

Great tutor!

I would highly recommend Su as a tutor. She was very knowledgeable on the subject of statistical analysis, she was interested and gave my questions lots of thought. She also answered all of my questions in a timely manner.
