About Aidan

I am a rising junior at Bennington College. At Bennington, we have to spend seven weeks during January and February at internships. While I am primarily studying literature, I have worked as a tutor at a charter school in Providence for the past two years, first as a math tutor, and then as a literacy tutor (while still doing some math).

I realized that the students liked me, and that I really enjoyed working with them, and feeling like I was doing something that was genuinely helpful. Every student is, of course, different, but my general outlook on tutoring is to point out and focus on the positives of what a student has worked on; it's a lot harder, especially when working individually, to continually point out what's wrong. That doesn't mean I don't point out what's wrong; I do, but from my tutoring experience, and experience in school and then college is that it's a lot easier to fix what I am doing wrong if I know that some part of what I did was on the right track. It can be as small as doing one small thing right, but as long as there's that, I believe that I can build and eventually correct my mistakes. That is what I try to do as a tutor: focus on what's right, so that the I, the tutor, and the student, can build on that to fix mistakes.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
