About Bruce

Sooner or later, a high school student in your family will face the writing segment of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). As writing skills become a more important part of college curricula, that segment has taken on a crucial role in any successful college application.

My name is Bruce, and I can help you. My experience includes fifteen years as a writing instructor at numerous colleges and universities. I have also prepared high-school juniors for the written part of the SAT.

As a tutor, I am patient, thorough and effective. I help students manage the test and the anxiety that interferes with a thoughtful, coherent response. They learn to identify different types of questions, carefully break down problems, and draft an effective time-limited response with speed and confidence. These skills lead to minimizing your student's stress and improving his or her performance.

I also have experience teaching reading and writing for students at a range of skill levels.

If you think I can help your student, please let me know. I look forward to hearing from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I have had over fifteen years' experience as a college-level instructor and have taught a course in public speaking at Johnson and Wales University. In addition, I have owned a small events beverage service company, which demanded a tactful public persona with customers. Finally, as a policy analyst, I have been called on to make presentations to lawmakers and other decision-makers.

SAT Reading

In addition to WyzAnt qualifications, I have prepared high school students for the writing and reading sections of the SAT.

SAT Writing

I have been a writing instructor to college students for approximately fifteen years. I have also prepared high school students for the writing component of standardized tests required for college applications. My methodology emphasizes brief, focused essays that develop logically and factually supported arguments. In addition, I give students the proofreading skills to produce writing that follows the conventions of English grammar.

Very patient and gentle tutor — It was my third time to meet with Bruce. He was so knowledgeable about business ethics, which really helped me a lot. My first language is not English, so I don't know some of words. Bruce was being extremely patient, so he used another way to explain to me. Thank you so much for being a great tutor. looking forward to meeting you again. ...
