Brown University (Sc.B. Applied Math - Biology)
I am a current Brown University undergraduate studying Applied Math and Biology. I scored a 2400 on the SAT reasoning test and 800s on the Math 2, Biology M, and French SAT subject tests. My results on these exams helped me find a place at a school that both challenges and supports me in my development as a student and as a person. I have several years of formal experience tutoring science and math at the high school and college level along with countless hours of more informal tutoring for my friends and acquaintances. I am currently a volunteer tutor for Brown SAT/College Prep, which collaborates with Breakthrough Providence and is funded by the Swearer Center for Public Service.
I choose to do work as a tutor because I strongly believe in the beauty of mathematical structures and scientific theories. Rarely do students realize that the material they study in class represents some of the greatest achievements of the human intellect. And unfortunately many teachers do not to emphasize the elegance of the subjects they teach, instead favoring a formulaic approach to learning that relies far too heavily on dry exercises and lots of memorization. In my experience, no matter how motivated a student may be at the beginning of the course, this style of teaching inevitably leads to boredom-induced burnout.
When I tutor, I focus on revealing the logical framework that forms the basis for what may seem to be a random collection of facts. I treat my students as intellectually mature beings who shouldn't be forced to complete wave upon wave of repetitive drills. And importantly, I ensure that my students understand that studying math and science is rewarding not only for their wide range of practical applications, but also for their inherent beauty.
I enjoy sharing knowledge and I take delight in my students' success. Please do not hesitate to let me know if I can be of any assistance! My daughter is very happy with her SAT math lessons. She told me that Tyler is very smart, very patient and never make her feel stupid. We will definitely hire him again in the future.
Tyler has helped my 8th grade son tremendously with Geometry. My son's grade has gone from a C+ to an A! Tyler is patient and gets the job done. He's also easy to reach by email and flexible about when to meet when necessary. Thanks!
Tyler is an absolutely amazing tutor. He has tutored my 14 year old in Geometry for the past several weeks and the results are amazing! After just the first lesson she said "Mom, I finally get it!" Not only have her grades improved tremendously but her confidence has as well. Tyler has a remarkable way of explaining concepts that she didn't previously understand. He even fit in an extra lesson to work with her to prepare on a big assessment. I can't say enough about him!
Tyler has been a wonderful tutor. He is very knowledgeable and can explain the content so it is understood. He has been wonderful to work with.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
