About Jason

Hello,

I am a certified social studies and special education teacher with several years of classroom teaching experience. I am also trained in the Orton-Gillingham method and I am an experienced O-G tutor. My areas of expertise are in reading, writing, history, and English. I am also able to tutor in math and science. I have a master's degree in special education, and as a result, I have developed a strong skill set that allows me to effectively teach students who have not responded optimally to traditional classroom instruction. My content area knowledge and my understanding of teaching's most critical aspects are corroborated by my having received two "Recognition of Excellence" awards from the Educational Testing Service for my high scores on those required teacher examinations.

Teaching, however, is more than academic knowledge: it requires making a connection with the student, patience, and the ability to find the best approach for helping each unique student learn in a way that is both comfortable and meaningful. I combine this individualized approach with teaching strategies that have been proven by research to maximize student learning. If your son or daughter has been struggling with school, or if you just want to see your child advance his or her skills to a higher level, please contact me at your earliest convenience so we can put a plan together and begin the process of improving your child's education.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

During the course of my master's in special education program, I have learned a great deal about the most effective, research-based practices for teaching students with ADD/ADHD. As a teacher, I have experience implementing these same practices to great effect with students.

Dyslexia

As a certified special education teacher who is trained in Orton-Gillingham, I have helped many dyslexic students improve their ability to read. I utilize several research-proven strategies that support students with dyslexia. I always begin by outlining the "big picture" and then assist the student in seeing how the parts of the passage relate to the whole. I also use graphic organizers and research proven strategies such as Brainstorming, List-Group-Label, KWL, cognitive mapping, and summary notes to assist students with comprehension.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taken many courses in both my teacher certification and special education master's programs that have prepared me to effectively teach elementary aged students. My high scores on the Praxis assessments indicate a strong content knowledge in English, math, social studies, and writing.

Praxis

I have taken 5 Praxis tests and received scores on all that would surpass the passing threshold in all states. I received the ETS recognition of Excellence award for my scores on the Praxis II PLT (191) and social studies content knowledge (188). I have taught a seminar at Providence College on studying for the Praxis II.

Social Studies

I am a social studies teacher with 2+ years of classroom experience. I received the ETS recognition of excellence award for my high score on the social studies Praxis II exam.

Study Skills

As a certified special education teacher, I have successfully helped many students develop improved study skills. I teach metacognitive strategies as well as content area specific techniques that improve study skills. Additionally, I use research-proven executive functioning improvement strategies such as using visual organizers, to-do lists, and binder/notebook organization of all materials.
