About Samantha

As a scientist by profession and a lover of the written word, I am passionate about tutoring others in writing due to its ability to combine a variety of disciplines. I recently graduated with a MSc in Research Methods of Psychological Science from the University of Glasgow in Scotland. My time at Glasgow Uni was diverse and colorful, amplifying my academic and scientific background while simultaneously honing my concise writing skills. Since my return to the states, I continued my part time work as a professional writing tutor at the Endicott College Writing Center, where I have worked as a tutor since 2007. During my undergraduate career (2006-2010) I served as a College Reading and Learning Association Level II certified tutor for three years through Endicott's Center for Teaching and Learning. I tutored at the Endicott Writing Center, as well as in various psychology and statistics courses. Through my work on my master's dissertation and at the writing center, I feel I have mastered the grammatical skills necessary to succeed in any academic setting.

As a tutor, my students are treated as equals. My first goal is to establish a comfortable rapport with my students. Having recently graduated from my program is a great advantage when tutoring because it develops that rapport almost immediately. Furthermore, although I recognize the importance of completing a particular homework or writing assignment, my tutor philosophy also takes into account the importance of the students taking skills away from our tutoring session that they can apply to their future education. Most importantly, I strive to remind students that they are capable of curiosity. I encourage them to ask questions, to combat what they are told, and not passively accept there is only one answer. These are the lessons I hold most valuable from my education and I hope I can help other students realize them as well.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Writing

I have worked as a college-level writing center tutor for more than eight years, gaining a great deal of experience in senior theses. I have helped students ages 18 to 60+ better understand their writing processes and become more confident and independent writers.
