I am an experienced instructor of English as a Foreign Language as well as a high school English teacher. I received a B.A. degree in English Literature from Boston University, have taken numerous graduate level courses in eduction, and completed a Teacher Certification program at Rhode Island College. While I have worked full time as an ESL teacher, I really love to work with students one on one. I find this to be a wonderful way to connect with students and I can structure my lessons to whatever the student needs. I try to make learning fun because I believe that happy students learn better than bored ones.
I have a very positive, outgoing and caring personality which makes it easy for me to relate to people of all ages and backgrounds. I am equally comfortable teaching children and adults. At past teaching jobs I have been known for developing close relationships with my students. I think teaching is an ongoing adventure; every day is unique. I look forward to working with you! Marsha is very patient and kind and my 6 year old enjoys his time spent with her. She makes reading fun!
Marsha is a great tutor and is very patient. My wife, who is her student, is very happy with her.
She states that she is learning something new every class and she stimulates her to talk more English.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught English as a Foreign Language for several years. My students come from all over the world, are usually college-age and range from beginner to advanced levels in their English ability. I have taught grammar, speech, including public speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing, including academic writing and vocabulary
My grammar classes have focused on grammatical structures, including subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, modal verbs, noun, adjective and adverb clauses, conditional sentences, prepositions, articles and proper pronoun/antecedent agreement
My reading and writing classes have focused on enhancing vocabulary and comprehension skills using a variety of techniques and texts, and developing writing skills from basic sentences to research papers.
I have developed curricula for additional classes in dramatic reading, current events, vocabulary, novels, creative writing and many other topics of interest to my students.
I have a wonderful relationship with students from every part of the world; many of them are still in touch with me.
