About Kelly

Hello! :) My name is Kelly and I'm so excited to be a tutor. I'm a native Rhode Islander, college grad, future law student, and lover of the written word. I've spent the last year working for a non-profit organization as a college adviser. I've had a year of experience working one-on-one with students, and spent several months editing college essays. I'm proud to say that my school had over 100 college acceptances this year, so it paid off!

The college essay was actually my favorite part of the college application process. I loved reading the personal stories, and I also enjoyed editing and sending them feedback. I always made sure to point out both the positive things and the places that could improve. I love having conversations with students about what their goals are. I also helped many students who were "stuck" and didn't know where to start. My favorite part of tutoring is definitely the personal connection I make with students.

I have been a reader and writer since I was a kid, and I've spent the last decade honing my skills. English and literature courses are my strong suit, and I have always received high grades in them. I have also written on a professional level, having been paid to write blog posts for Tufts University's Career Center. My supervisor noted me for my writing ability, claiming that editing for my posts was almost never needed. I am a self-editor, and I have an eye for detail when it comes to grammar, sentence structure, and prose. I also used my writing skills to put together a personal statement that helped gain acceptance to six law schools. I will be starting law school in the fall with the highest academic scholarship they have.

I love helping students! I pride myself on being a kind and friendly person. I'm also kinda nerdy and always love to talk about superheroes! Since I've worked in a high school, I know that I get along great with people that age. In fact, a lot of my previous students said I was one of their favorite adults in the building. I plan to bring my kindness along as a tutor. I can't wait to help you on your writing journey! :)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I was an employee of the Career Center at Tufts University for a year. I worked as a blogger, and I wrote weekly articles on different aspects of career development. I did extensive research on different topics related to careers. I have particular expertise in organizing the job search, preparing for interviews, and matching careers to your personality.

College Counseling

I have worked as a professional college counselor for the past year. I was trained at Brown University and worked at my own high school as the school's only college adviser. I helped students through the entire college application process, and my school had over 300 college acceptances this year!

English

English has always been my best subject. I received note for my English skills in high school. I was part of the National Honors Society thanks to my high grades. At graduation, I was Salutatorian and I received a special pin for outstanding work in English. In college, I continued this pattern. Though not an English major, almost all of my Political Science classes required essays and reading comprehension, which I excelled at.

Political Science

I was a Political Science major at Tufts University. Tufts has one of the most intensive PS programs in the country. I was also accepted into Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Honors Society for Political Science, based on my high grades in PS courses.

Proofreading

At Tufts University, my work-study job was at the Career Center. I was a blogger and social media intern. As such, I was tasked with writing weekly blog posts. With blogging, it's very important that there are no typos or errors. I would always proofread my work before submitting it, and my supervisor complimented me on how polished my work was compared to other bloggers she worked with.

Reading

Reading comprehension is one of my greatest skills. A lifelong reader, I challenged myself by taking reading intensive courses in college. I was reading upwards of 300 pages a week for class, and needed to understand it all to get high grades. I also did very well on my LSAT, getting a score of 159 (in the top 25% nationally). My best section on the LSAT was the reading comprehension section.

Writing

I have extensive experience in both academic and professional writing. I worked for Tufts University as a blogger for their Career Center. I also received a score of 159 on my LSAT test, which is in the top 25% nationally. The LSAT (and law school in general) require excellent reading and writing abilities. My personal essay helped me get into six different law schools, so I must be doing something right! :)
