As your potential tutor, I bring over a decade of varied teaching experience, including several years working in both urban and rural public schools in two different states. I am currently certified in English/Language Arts for grades 5-12. My strengths include patience, organization, and my ability to establish and maintain a mutually respectful rapport with my students. I still keep in touch with many of the students I taught over a decade ago!
I believe one of the keys to improving reading comprehension is to provide texts to which students can relate. When students can connect with a novel, whether it be with the theme or the characters, they not only can understand what they read, but analyze it as well. When teaching students how to read non fiction pieces, again, choosing pieces that are of interest to your students is key. I provide students with a skills set that enables them to "unpack" text. This may include highlighting important points, looking for key words, and paying attention to first and last paragraphs, as well as topic sentences.
As with reading, writing is easier when students are able to draw from personal experiences or choose topics that are of interest to them. I try to make every student realize the worth of his or her own wealth of experiences. My students are successful when we study a writing genre by looking at a good example, and then breaking down the assignment into smaller, manageable parts. I like to incorporate some direct instruction, and then allow students to independently practice what they learned. For example, if we are writing introductions for persuasive pieces, we'll look at a great example. Then, I might provide students with a graphic organizer that will help them organize their thoughts. Providing scaffolding for students helps them to produce better pieces of writing.
I hope I can share my teaching methods and experience with you in the near future!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a B.A. in English and have taught the subject in both public schools and homeschool settings for over 10 years. I was also employed as a Literacy Coach. During this time, I provided professional development for teachers, as well as modeled best practices for use in the classroom.
