About Melissa

I have over 15 years experience as a middle level mathematics teacher and interventionist. I have also taught ELA in grade 6. I enjoy working with all learners. My strength as a tutor is in meeting the needs of the student academically and in learning style. I have expertise and training helping students with executive functioning challenges find strategies that meet there needs to become more successful and independent.

I love tutoring because it is rewarding and fun to see students become more competent and confident. Working one-on-one observing and understanding each learner makes me a more effective teacher. Students teach me asmuch as I teach them.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have co-taught many years with special education teachers gaining experience with many ADD/ADHD students. Eventually building executive functioning structures into my class procedures and teaching style.

I have completed the 360 Thinking Program for Executive Functioning Skills. Co-authored by Kristen Jacobson, M.S., CCC/SLP and Sarah Ward, M.S., CCC/SLP

Algebra 1

I have 16+ years as a math teacher and earned my BA and MAT at RI College. I have taught 6th grade through Algebra 1. I teach all ability groups in core math courses as well as interventionist mat classes. I enjoy finding different and creative ways to present concepts so all students become competent and confident in the content. As an interventionist, I examine a student's mathematical thinking looking to correct any misconceptions or fill in any gaps in an age appropriate way. I enjoy seeing students light up when they learn something new or master a concept they may have been struggling with.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a RI Elementary teaching certificate.

Study Skills

I have taught full time for 15 years in middle school. My experience is 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math as well as math intervention. Study skills are a parallel/hidden curriculum essential to teaching any core content in middle school.
