Looking for someone to work with your elementary or middle school child? I have over fifteen years experience teaching language arts and social studies to middle and high school children. I am Rhode Island certified as an elementary and middle school teacher and have passed the Praxis Highly Qualified content tests for all subjects in elementary school and for Social Studies in middle school. I hold a Masters Degree in Teaching from Brown University and a Masters of Arts in philosophy from Andover Newton.
In addition to my experience as a second, third, and fifth grade classroom teacher, I have also taught classes in religion at the Moses Brown School in Providence; world history and literature to high school students in the Dominican Republic; and language arts and social studies to middle school students in Guatemala. I currently teach Middle School Social Studies and Technology at a charter school in Central Falls, Rhode Island. Over the years I have built an extensive personal library of fiction and nonfiction books appropriate for all ages. I have extensive experience working with young people for whom English is not their first language.
My tutoring experience includes working with students from all walks of life and from many parts of the world. I also have experience working with students struggling with dyslexia and ADHD.
My teaching style is inclusive. I believe that the student, tutor, teacher, and parent are partners in the education of a child and that open communication must be maintained between everyone. I encourage students to develop of love of learning and try to develop an intrinsic desire to explore new possibilities in learning.
I am married with two beautiful children. Our home is in North Kingstown, Rhode Island. My favorite hobbies are reading, rock climbing, and mountaineering. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I worked for three years as High School American History teacher at a private school in the Dominican Republic, four years as a middle school social studies teacher in Guatemala, and six years teaching Social Studies at a charter school in Central Falls, RI.
I have a Master of Arts in Teaching (elementary) from Brown University and am certified by the State of Rhode Island as an elementary classroom teacher (k-6). I passed the Praxis Highly Qualified Teacher content tests for all elementary subjects. I have served as a classroom teacher in the third, fifth, and sixth grades. I have also served as a humanities teacher for seventh grade students. I have experience teaching with the Everyday Math and the Terc Investigations curriculums. I have a large reading library for elementary and middle school age students and have extensive experience teaching language arts to late elementary and middle school students. For the last seven years I have worked in private schools in the Dominican Republic and Guatemala as a humanities teacher for sixth and seventh grade students and have served as a tutor in all subject areas for many local and international students of all ages.
I worked in international schools for over seven years. As a result, I have a great deal of direct experience working with students for whom English is not their first language. I have also worked as a tutor with many students from many cultures to improve their reading, writing, and speaking skills. In 2007, I successfully completed the ESL in the Mainstream training program.
I have a BA in Religion and Psychology from Texas Christian University and a Master of Arts in philosophical theology from Andover Newton. During my MA program, I took classes at Harvard, Boston College, and St. Johns. My thesis was titled Nietzsche's Philosophy of History. I have taught world religions to middle and high school students, the philosophy of religion to high school students, and a Knowledge, Theory, Values class to upper high school students.
