About Najib

Here is a little bit about me:

I am enrolled as an undergraduate at Brown University. I concentrate my studies in Applied Math while also learning about Physics, Geology and Probability and Statistics. I have taken an year off from Brown so I can take a rest from the rigors of learning at Brown.

I like to work on puzzles and play strategic board games with other people so I can keep learning about people and keep my mind sharp.

I was born In Cleveland, Ohio but was raised in Pakistan. I finished high school in Pakistan before returning to the USA for my Bachelor's Degree from Brown.

I completed my A' Levels in the year 2012 in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Thinking Skills and Computer Science. I have spent three years studying at Brown and have taken the 20116-2017 academic year off to rest from my own studies.

Teaching Experience:

I tutored my friends in high school and, to a lesser extent, in college. During my Sophomore year at Brown, I started tutoring professionally. I taught Math and Physics to students taking introductory courses in the subjects. I also became a Teacher's Assistant in a Calculus course for a semester.

After my Sophomore year, I took an year off to further explore teaching. I taught at a high school in Pakistan for a year. I worked with Juniors and Seniors in the school and taught the Math, Physics and Chemistry. I also started helping students with their preparations for the SAT and the ACT.

After this year was over, I came back to Brown. I stopped teaching professionally during my Junior year at Brown because of my academic course load. However, I continued to remotely help my students in Pakistan with their SAT and ACT.

Teaching Philosophy:

Over the years, I have evolved as a teacher. Now when I meet with a new student, I always take a measure of what the student knows and how well they know it. I like to find out which areas they have trouble with so I can concentrate more on them. I work with the student to set goals to be achieved over the duration of our collaboration. Major goals include a mark for how much improvement we can expect to make. Such goals are then divided into several small, short-term goals. Such goals are always achievable, keeping me keep my students motivated throughout the time I work with them.

While working with my students, I like to learn how they learn and to adapt my teaching techniques accordingly. I am capable of talking through concepts or of sitting back to listen as a student works through a concept verbally. I can make use of graphic aids and pictures. I am adept at reading non-verbal cues and body language to judge the student's progress in understanding a concept.

As a tutor, I recognize that I am not replacing the student's instructor. Rather, I form a partnership with the student to work through problems together. As such, I am not afraid to admit if I do not know the solution to a problem. This often motivates students as they see that I am not perfect. As I work through a problem or learn a concept with a student, I try and impart my learning skills to them. This, I think, is the most important skill I can give them in setting them on their way to becoming an independent learner.

My Hours:

I am a resident in Narragansett during my year off from school. I work during the day on most days but like to tutor in the evening. Please contact me if you would like to set up an appointment.

Cancellation Policy:

I make every effort to accommodate the schedules of my students. I understand that many students have sports practices, games, illnesses, etc. I can usually shuffle my schedule in a short amount of time. However, I am not a magician. Therefore, I need a notice of at least 24 hours if you want to cancel or reschedule an appointment. If cancellation or rescheduling is requested less than 24 hours from the start time of the appointment and I cannot find time on the same day of the appointment, I will charge half the fee for the appointment.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I had scores of 800 each in SAT math and the SAT subject test in Math level 2. ACT math is almost exactly the same as SAT math.

Algebra 2

I study Applied Math at Brown and have experience in tutoring Math in the Algebra 1 to Calculus levels.

I passed my A' levels exam in Physics with an A and study Applied Math and Physics as an undergraduate at Brown University. I have also tutored for courses in Physics to college and high school students.

SAT Math

I scored 800 points on the SAT math section and on the SAT subject test in Math level 2. I am enrolled at Brown University pursuing a degree in Applied Math.
