About Sarah

Hello!

I have a PhD in American history and I have taught that course at the college and secondary levels. I also have taught high school courses in religion and Asian Cultures. With two children under the age of 3, tutoring offers me the flexibility I need to continue my love of teaching and my interest in helping young people find their intellectual "voices." I am very much a "Socratic method" teacher, delving into subjects by asking probing questions, but I understand that certain basic information also needs to be imparted and processed by the student. I firmly believe in paying careful attention to the rigors of writing. I think it is a craft getting shortchanged at many secondary educational institutions and I believe strong communication skills are necessary to succeed in any future professional endeavor.

That is a little about me and my teaching philosophy. I very much enjoy humor and humanity with my students, but first and foremost I encourage and expect focus and hard work.

Thanks for reading! -- Sarah

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

SAT Writing

Although the numbering system differs now from 25 years ago, my verbal SATs were good enough to get me into Yale! I have been writing and reading professionally for 16 years and know I can help you boost your SAT scores significantly!
