Roger Williams University (Graduate Coursework)
I am a 44 year old single mom to a five year old girl. I just recently retired from the Army reserves after 11 years of service. I attend Roger Williams University studying in the graduate MPA program and Criminal Justice. I have 5 years experience substitute teaching in the Woonsocket school system.
I have years of after-school program mentoring, leading, and guiding the youth within this district. My program Army Cadet Corps, was my own developed, successful after school program. The youth ages 8-16, male and female learned to adapt to the Army style approach yet were able to become their own person. I love mentoring and teaching young children and adults to better themselves and be able to help those around themselves. The most satisfaction I get out of teaching is when my students are able to take what they have learned and share with others. Most of my students later mentor others and pass on what they have learned.
Writing for me is fun. I am currently writing 3 personal books and will hoped to later on within my academic career work on my dissertation for the PH.D program for Public Policy at UMASS Boston. In the academic world you have to find your own skill but be able to adapt to the high demands of writing graduate level papers. I am currently working on two masters degrees and the demand to write well is never an option.
As a elementary substitute I was able to adapt to every grade level and relate to each student, both well-behaved to the behavioral issues. My skills as a natural leader allowed me to begin my after-school program 9 years ago, the program ran for 8 years. All my students that I had the privilege of teaching became cadets of the program..
As a student of criminal justice I understand the system. I was in law enforcement and the security field for over 18 years. As a recent solder we have to learn our history so as not to repeat the same. I read at a leisure time many history books. History is part of everyone's culture no matter what religion or cultural background, everyone should know something about history, big or small.
I believe I have a lot to offer not only on a academic level but also as a mentor. I encourage students to learn, and expand in their confidences. I am well rounded and versed I many areas of academics. My students like to refer to me as the cool teacher, I just tell them that I am not here to judge but to just help. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
