About Karen

Here is the good news. You can be successful in your science courses, even if it feels like the material is overwhelming, and you have reached a point where you are completely frustrated. I was once in that place too during a graduate school anatomy course, because there was such a large volume of information that I had to memorize, and by the time I realized that I didn't know how to tackle it, I was already in over my head!

How did I make it through my course and go on to become successful in earning my Master's Degree. I had to regroup and figure out a different way to study the sciences that worked best for me. In other words, I had to figure out my own best learning style. I discovered, quite by accident, that people learn in different ways, and that I was trying to memorize material using a style that just did not work for me!

Did you know that some people learn best if they listen to course instruction, while others learn best participating in hands on activities? Still others learn best visually, using things like pictures and video to learn course material.

However, most coursework these days is presented in lecture form, and this may not work for the hands on or visual learners out there. Needless to say, this experience had a huge impact on me, and ironically, it became the basis for my physical therapy research thesis. After all, I was going to have to teach a great deal to my patients about the science behind their injuries and the process of healing, and they were sure to have many different learning styles as well.

Today, I am very privileged not only to share my extensive knowledge of the sciences with you, but to share it in a way that will make sense to you.

I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology/ Chemistry, as well as a Master's Degree in Physical Therapy, and what my students really find helpful is that I am able to share concrete, practical applications for much of the science I teach/tutor from my experience as an outpatient physical therapist.

I have taught and tutored for ten+ years in the sciences, including Anatomy, Physiology, Pathophysiology, Kinesiology, Biology, Chemistry and many other physical therapy related courses.

For the past 3 years, I have had the opportunity to teach online coursework in a graduate level Occupational Therapy program, so I am also very well versed in how to use technology to help you become successful in your science coursework. I am living proof that the sciences do not have to be frustrating or overwhelming, because not only are the sciences my specialty and my passion, but I have made it my mission to share the material in way that works for you! I look forward to working with you.

I have always loved seeing students, who thought the sciences were "impossible", exceed their own expectations just by having things explained in a way that they could relate to. This is my gift and my passion. I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

I have taught and tutored Anatomy in both nursing and Physical Therapy for many years. My students love that I am able to make the connection between the Anatomy that they are learning, and real live clinical scenarios from my experience as a physical therapist. I also approach my teaching using many different presentation styles to meet the student's own learning style, so that he or she really remembers the information being presented.
