B.S. Mercy College (Elementary Ed. and Special Ed.)
Long Island University (Master's)
I am a certified elementary and special education teacher. I have been a public school teacher in suburban NY for 33 years and have recently moved to Rhode Island. I have experience as a classroom teacher and my Masters degree in reading/literacy has also given me the opportunity to have been a reading teacher. My formal studies beyond my graduate degree include courses at Columbia University specifically in the areas of reading and writing. Throughout my long career I have tutored many, many students in reading/writing and math.
My efforts and goals, both in the classroom and in the homes with students I have tutored, has always focused on observing how each individual learns and retains information. With this acquired knowledge I am able to engage each learner in understanding how to think about his/her thinking. Equipped with this ability/skill he/she becomes an active and willing participant in their own learning, growth, problem solving and success. The proof of this success gradually becomes evident in the way in which the student unmistakably glows with confidence and eagerness. One should remember that the process of learning is a rewarding journey that the student and teacher take together, therefore both individuals are responsible to each other and to themselves. Learning is a serious business but it must by an enjoyable one as well!
I have had the privilege of being a teacher to other teachers. I have personally pioneered insightful approaches to teaching reading/literacy throughout my 33 year career as I purposefully made choices to vary my teaching opportunities so as not to become limited in knowing what and how a child learns at one particular age. This had required me to interact with a myriad of professional educators both as peers and mentors. My Masters degree in literacy and my additional course work through Columbia University Teachers College 'Reading and Writing' workshops further attest to my qualifications for teaching reading and vocabulary.
As I have stated above, my experiences and course of studies have qualified me to teach phonics to the early learner. More specifically is my 10 years spent as a reading teacher.
All of the information above specifying my teaching and learning opportunities clearly shows my qualifications in the areas of spelling and study skills. Although these curriculum areas are separated here in this profile request they are inseparable in the total process of teaching and learning literacy.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Study skills is paramount to being successful at test taking, retention of information and I have always stressed this importance to students. I have taught study skills in preparation for state exams.
