About Lauren

Hi, my name is Lauren and I am 26 years old. I graduated from Rhode Island College with my BS in Elementary Education and Special Education, with a certification in Early Childhood Education as well. I received my masters degree in ESL (teaching English as a second language) a few years later. I love working with children of all ages. I have experience with children of all ages, as I have worked in a child care facility, as a babysitter, and currently as a Kindergarten teacher. I currently live in Greenville, Rhode Island. However, I am fairly familiar with most of Rhode Island.
I am certified to teach grades pre-k-8 and have experience working with all grades. I have extensive experience working with kindergarten through third grade students who are developing their foundational reading and math skills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I have been teaching kindergarten for the past 2 years under the Common Core. I am aware of the changes that were made when the standards were changed and I have been teaching to these standards through our curriculum. BS in Elementary Education and Special Education, with a certification in Early Childhood Education as well.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to teach this area because I am currently teaching kindergarten in a public elementary school. Prior to this, I taught elementary science for grades 1-6 and before that I subbed in all grades and academic areas from preschool through 8th grade. I have a BS in Elementary Education and Special Education, with a certification in Early Childhood Education as well.

Elementary Math

I have spent the last two years teaching kindergarten in RI. I have extensive background in elementary math due to the fact that I spend all year teaching foundational math skills including counting, number ID, 2D and 3D shapes, measurement, addition, and subtraction. Although I am currently teaching kindergarten, I have taught all other elementary grades while subbing in math.

Elementary Science

Prior to teaching kindergarten, I was a science teacher for grades 1-6 in a public school in RI. I taught earth, life, and physical science to over 230 students that year. This experience has enabled me to teach elementary science to a variety of ages of students.

Grammar

I have recently received my Masters in teaching English as a second language. The coursework in this program focused heavily on the foundations of the English language including the many aspects of grammar.

Handwriting

Working as a kindergarten teacher, I spend all year teaching handwriting to my students. I have songs and rhymes to help students in holding the pencil properly and beginning to write letters. I use various curriculum materials that I have acquired over the years including handwriting with tears, early intervention strategies, and core knowledge strategies.

Phonics

I have spent the last two years teaching kindergarten in RI. I spend all year teaching foundational reading skills, including phonics. I have extensive background in teaching letter sounds, letter names, high frequency word reading, blending sounds to read words, and beginning writing.

Reading

Teaching kindergarten this year and last year, I have developed many strategies to teach reading to a variety of levels of students. I have acquired various materials and resources to aid in the teaching of reading as well.

Spelling

All of my teaching experiences, including subbing/kindergarten teacher/science teacher, have allowed me to teach spelling to my students. I have developed strategies to help students who are struggling to spell as well.
