About Sue

I have been teaching in a public school system for 28 years. I have taught both elementary education and special education. I have training in specialized reading programs for disabled kids. I am Orton Gillingham trained and have used it as a basis for my teaching of phonics for many years. I currently teach full time and am just looking to tutor a few hours a week.

I am a certified elementary education teacher who has 28 years of experience. I have received a commendable rating on my last teacher evaluation using the new RIDE system.

I have tutored many students in the past who have had difficulty with reading and they have become successful. I an mainly interested in working with students in grades 1-4. I enjoy working with students who are motivated and who want to learn. I also like to encourage parents to listen in and participate in the lesson if possible so they will know best how to help their child at home. I like to use engaging activities and games when working 1:1 with students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

I am a certified elementary/special education teacher in the state of RI with 28 years of teaching experience.

Reading

Right now I teach second grade reading, but in the past I have taught first grade as well as special education. I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham method for reading although I tend to use a modified version when I am teaching or tutoring. I have been teaching for 30 years.
