About Sandra-Lynn

I began working in the chemistry field in 1996, after completing an AS in Chemical Technology, where I continued to work for four years. Upon the birth of my third child and the health issues I experienced while working in the laboratory environment, I decided to go back to school and study teaching. I think the biggest factor in my decision was all the time I put in as a tutor during my Chemical Technology degree; it was such a great feeling to know that I contributed to the success of others even if it was just briefly. I completed my studies in 2005 and began working immediately as a high school chemistry and general science teacher. I instantly fell in love with teaching, my students and I challenged one another every day. My most challenging students quickly became some of my favorites and I became one of the teachers they could depend on.

I have taught several subjects during my tenure as a science educator, I am very familiar with the Common Core across all of the science curriculum. I have four subjects for which I have written Common Core based curriculum for, astronomy, geology, oceanography and chemistry. I can teach both astronomy and geology at the high school or middle school level, oceanography requires an understanding of many core high school sciences and is therefore, only taught at the high school level. My core subject is chemistry and has sadly kept me out of the middle school classroom. I love teaching chemistry and bringing my experiences in a laboratory setting into the classroom, I feel that it is an integral part of who I am and should be shared. I have very flexible hours and am willing to meet with my students at their local libraries (which I prefer) or in their homes. I have taught all academic levels, from challenged students to honors students and have found a great deal of success at all levels.

I am also a certified math teacher, however, I have not had any formal classroom experience in this subject. I have tutored students in middle school math, algebra I, algebra II, geometry and trigonometry. I have had a lot of experience teaching math skills to my science students as the scope and sequence of math skills often does not align with those of science.

I prefer the hands-on approach to learning and often have mini-labs that accompany each lesson. I utilize my own PowerPoint presentations with notes as well as extra support worksheets. I also utilize YouTube for demonstrations that would be impractical and unsafe to perform outside of a science laboratory setting. I am more than willing to work along side your teacher and follow their curriculum so that you receive the greatest benefit possible from your tutoring experience. Before the first tutoring session I will require a syllabus from you so that I can be optimally prepared for our meeting. Please prepare yourself by generating a list of questions and having any work in which you have struggled, with you at every session.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Astronomy

I have loved looking at the night sky and wondering what lies beyond our solar system and Galaxy since childhood. Eight years ago I decided it was time to share this passion with my students and created a high school level astronomy class. I integrated a number of astronomy websites and apps into my teaching to enhance my student's experience and understanding of astronomy, which I carry over to my tutoring sessions.
