About Jason

Hi I’m Jason and I’ve been teaching professionally since 2006. I have a BA in History, an MA in Russian Area Studies and did two years of coursework towards a PhD in History. I earned my teaching certification as a high school Social Studies teacher from New Jersey and have worked in public schools teaching history, sociology and psychology. I’ve spent a year in Russia teaching ESL classes and have worked as a graduate teaching assistant at both the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and at The University of Kansas during my graduate studies.

Above all, I try do two things when teaching: (1) Make the learning experience fun and enjoyable for students, so that they want to continue to learn on their own. (2) Build students’ confidence by demystifying the course material they struggle with and by making the subject approachable.

I’m particularly good at helping students master elements of writing, reading comprehension, and critical thinking. I have experience with both the SAT and GRE exams and encourage students to make personally meaningful connections to course material across subject fields and disciplines. I try to assist students to not only master the coursework at hand, but also to develop tools and strategies that allow them to leverage their hard work into achieving their personal goals.

My own writing credits include a published conference paper in American History, my MA thesis on Russian bicycles in 1890’s, and numerous college seminar papers at the graduate level. I’ve also authored both personal and institutional grant proposals, technical documentation for computer software, and workflow management documents for project teams. I’ve translated historical documents and historical analysis from Russian, Polish, French, and German sources as part of my various research projects, and have worked in libraries in the United States and Europe.

I’m happy to work with students online or in person and to work with you to develop a schedule that works for you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Russian

I hold an MA in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Area Studies and was accepted to a PhD program in Russian History. I've studied the language intensively in Indiana, Illinois, and Kansas and have used it as a research language. I lived and worked outside of Moscow for a year while teaching ESL, and used Russian to communicate with students, faculty, and parents, as well as in daily life.

Social Studies

I hold a standard certificate as Teacher of Social Studies from the NJ Department of Education and spent two years teaching the subject in public high schools before returning to graduate school full time.

Theater

I minored in this topic while at my undergraduate institution, graduated summa cume laude and the qualification appears on my transcripts. Those transcripts are available if needed. I was also involved in high school, college and community theater productions for many years, both as an actor and behind the scenes.

Very patient and well informed

Jason was great working with my son - patiently directing him and stepping back to let him come up with ideas at appropriate times. First rate teacher.
