About Michael

Hello! I'm a Freshman in the Honors Program in Boston College's Lynch School of Education, and am double majoring in Secondary Education and Math. At Boston College, I am a member of the Screaming Eagle's Marching Band, the BC Symphonic Band, the BC Pep Band, and the Newton Volunteer Services Tutoring program for which I go to a local Newton elementary school to tutor a third grader in math. I am a huge theater geek, and love watching movies, seeing plays, and performing in them. Over the summer I love to go hiking and camping, primarily in New Hampshire (my profile picture is on top of Mount Lincoln).

With regards to my tutoring experience, I was a member of the Peer Tutoring program at my high school for four years, and as mentioned, continue to tutor in college now. My forte is Math (specifically SAT/ACT math and Algebra 1 and 2), having been an avid member of my high school's math team, and a high scorer as well. I graduated high school as a member of the National Honor Society in the top 10 % of my class and tested in the 94th percentile on the SATs.

When it comes to tutoring, I tend to focus on the three R's: Repetition, Relationships, and Retention. Not only have I as a student personally benefited from utilizing these techniques, but it has also helped numerous students and friends alike. The repetition aspect is fairly self-explanatory. With regard to relationships, I have found it to be extremely helpful to connect words and phrases involved in a certain subject area to things that are much more germane to us (e.g. anagrams, analogies, songs, etc.). Retention is more so a byproduct of repetition and relationships. Throughout my years of schooling, I have come to find that the most influential teachers were those whose teaching material remained with me long after taking the class. It is for that reason that I make a point of returning to topics and vocabulary covered in the past, in order to ensure this retention of information.

To me, one of the most rewarding feelings is when something finally clicks for a student. It serves as a validation of not only the hard work that I have invested, but also that of the student.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Study Skills

As a member of the Peer Tutoring program at my high school, I met with students once a week to help them with homework and study plans. Numerous students as well as friends in my classes have returned telling me they have been greatly improving in classes by using the techniques I suggested. I tend to gear my study sessions on the three R's: Repetition, Relationships, and Retention.

Theater

I participated in my high school's theater program for four consecutive years, have speaking roles and leads in every one. I was a three year member of our program's student theater board and also competed in our state's drama festival in which our show placed third out of twelve schools. In addition, I have participated in several community theater productions over the summer and have taken many theater classes in high school.
