My name is Andrew D. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics/Statistics in 1995. Since then, I have tutored many individuals in several areas of Math. In addition to my regular everyday job, I enjoy being a Math tutor. As you can see, tutoring individuals has been an interest of mine for many years. Being a tutor brings me great joy and a sense of achievement, knowing I can make a positive difference in one’s academic studies. As a math tutor, my goal is to assist individuals with any difficulties, concerns, or any other questions he or she may have in this area of subject. I want to show individuals that there can be an easier way for doing Math and allow them to develop the tools that they can use to achieve their math goals. My ultimate goal is for the student to be comfortable having a math tutor and also feel anxiety free of any math concerns. For example, my wife was out of college for a long time, and did not know the math concepts. I recently re-taught my wife all her anxiety concerns, and now she is a college graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In order to master Algebra I, it requires you to earn actively. For most of us, by just reading the examples in the book or online will not give you the skills to be successful in any technical discipline. In order for you to have it stored in your long term memory, you will need to have the mindset that constantly working out problems will benefit you. For example, you can read a about how to exercise, but the only way to get physically stronger or lose weight is to actually do the exercise. This same philosophy applies when you study math. You need to think of me as like a “math” fitness trainer because I will push and expand your knowledge to get ahead or obtain a higher grade necessary to advance to the next level. Also, you need to think of Math as building concepts one after another like a big pyramid. If there are a lot of gaps in the pyramid, it will collapse, or you cannot start building a house starting on the third floor as my old high school basketball coach would say. You and I will work on the foundation or base needed to close any apparent gaps that you might have. I will try to find the gaps or holes that are holding you back. Therefore, instead of memorizing concepts and facts that you will forget, you will use logic and intuition which will occur naturally like pieces of a puzzle. Therefore, sometimes we might have to go down one or two levels to get ahead, and like anything in life it will take work on your part.
Chemical compounds or reactions are very difficult to visualize. The best way to master this information is to create your own compounds using the physical model kits (hands-on approach). Students can actually see for themselves, and it helps them retain the information. Lastly, consistently doing the problems and asking alot of open ended questions are important to see if this logical or not. Instead of trying to memorize the procedures or definitions, I try to make the students learn the conceptual process so it will all come together like pieces of a puzzle fitting nicely together.
