I can help you learn to draw or focus specifically on fashion design and illustration. I pride myself in being able to help students create a balanced and exceptional portfolio for acceptance to top art colleges. Please read the 'Student Testimonials' below.
I am a 1984 graduate of Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Apparel Design. I have worked in the Fashion Industry over 20 years. Starting as an assistant, I worked my way to associate then designer, finally reaching the position of design director.
I lived and worked in New York City for 16 years, working at the ateliers of major designers such as Bill Blass and Adrienne Vittadini. Some of my career highlights during that time are having my dresses from Blassdress in the windows of Henri Bendel, and working with Mr. Blass directly on many design projects.
I have traveled the world as a designer, working in Hong Kong, China, Korea, Paris, Florence, Milan, and Tokyo, and my last full time job, at the Daggar Group, was as Design Director of a $100 million dollar private label company.
In 2007, I began teaching in the Fashion Design program at Mount Ida College’s School of Design where the senior class petitioned the Academic Vice-President to allow me to teach their Senior Portfolio Presentation class, since they trusted my guidance and made enormous strides in my classes.
Six years ago, I developed my own fashion design workshops for teenagers in the RI/Mass area, and Syracuse, New York. I have created a curriculum that I believe inspires students to achieve their very best. We work with professional standards, and even 12-year old young designers come away with projects worthy of a college portfolio.
I am an extremely hard working and resourceful person. I have gained knowledge from my successes and failures throughout my career and have learned how to give my best to whatever I attempt. I know how to accomplish something well, manage my time, and find and request help when needed. I will help you to achieve your goals using these tools as well.
“...you have been the best instructor and i have improved the most in your class. In the other classes I wasn’t challenged much. “- Corinne B
“Elana is such a wonderful teacher. She has wonderful ideas and is such a caring and hands on teacher. She creates helpful skill building projects and out of all the teachers I have had has best prepared me for my leap into the working world out of college.” August 7, 2010 - Sammie S, My Ida Graduate
“"I am very privileged to have had Elana as my portfolio instructor. She guided students through the process of creating a book that was both highly creative and technical. Elana was also very aware of how to allocate attention to students. She was an attentive and engaging instructor." August 18, 2010- Elena S, Mt Ida graduate
“I really appreciate everything you've done for me. I don't know how I am ever going to be able to repay you for all of things you've done for me. Out of all of the people who have tried to help me reach my goal you are the only one who puts things into perspective, and also puts a sense of realism on what i hope to accomplish.” - Rachel S I have tutored students not only in fashion but also in drawing and portfolio. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
